Five Hardware Requirements That Determine Compliance
1. Latch and Lock Hardware Type
Round knobs are not permitted on accessible routes. Period. Hardware must be operable with one hand and must not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist. Acceptable hardware types include:
- Lever handles -- the most common choice for locksets and latchsets on accessible openings
- Loop pulls -- often used on sliding or pocket doors
- Push/pull plates and bars -- acceptable where latching is not required
- Panic (exit) devices -- push-bar operation is inherently one-hand operable on the egress side

In practice, most cylindrical and mortise locksets install with the lever centerline at approximately 38 inches AFF, which falls comfortably within the required band. 3. Door Opening Force

Thresholds on accessible routes must not exceed 1/2 inch in height. Any threshold taller than 1/4 inch must be beveled on both sides at a slope no steeper than 1:2. Abrupt vertical edges -- common on older sliding-door sills and some exterior thresholds -- create a trip and wheel-chair barrier.

ICC A117.1 Section 404.2.3 requires specific floor clearances adjacent to the latch side of a door so a wheelchair user can approach, operate the hardware, and pull or push the door open without repositioning. The exact dimensions vary based on:
- Whether the door swings toward or away from the user
- Whether the approach is parallel or perpendicular to the wall
- Whether a closer or latch is present
