Fire Door Gap Solutions

When a fire-door inspection fails, one of the most common findings is excessive clearance -- gaps at the head, jambs, meeting edge, or floor that exceed NFPA 80. NGP GapGuard fire-door accessories bring existing rated doors and frames back into compliance without replacing the door or frame. Each kit is a listed miscellaneous fire-door accessory (UL10B / UL10C as printed on the product), sized to the gap location rather than a generic weatherstrip.

What is an excessive fire-door gap?

NFPA 80 allows about 1/8 inch at the head and jambs on hollow-metal doors (plus or minus 1/16 inch), up to 1/8 inch on fire-rated wood (up to 3/16 inch on 20-minute wood), and 3/4 inch at the bottom of wood and metal doors. Clearance beyond those limits is an excessive gap: smoke and fire can pass, and the assembly stays out of compliance until it is repaired. Shop by where the gap is -- frame, door, or accessories.

NGP GAP90 GapGuard fire door head and jamb kit

Frame Solutions

Frame Solutions: head, jamb, and frame-face gap kits

GAP90 GapGuard kits close head and jamb gaps over 1/8 inch, up to 9/16 inch with a 16-gauge steel 9945 stop extender, NGP-Edge 9400 intumescent, and a 5050C silicone fire-and-smoke bulb -- a heavier solution than screw-applied aluminum perimeter gasketing. Factory listing on GAP90 is up to 180 minutes on hollow metal and 90 minutes on wood. GAP90N is the narrow-soffit kit for stops from 1/2 inch to 1-3/8 inch.

Damaged or cut frames use FP180 patch and FR180 repair kits. Self-adhesive 9200 (up to 60 minute) and 9750 (20 minute) intumescent belong on the frame stop too. After the gap is closed, 9275 ASA or 9225 T-strike shims may be required so the latchbolt still engages.

NGP 9590 GapGuard fire door bottom gap kit

Door Solutions

Door Solutions: top, meeting-edge, and bottom gap kits

Use 9990 for a top gap up to 1/2 inch on doors with parallel-arm closers that a head/jamb kit cannot reach. GAP90-ME closes meeting-edge and pair clearance up to 3/8 inch (vertical-rod or flush-bolt edges).

Bottoms: 9590 stainless to 1-1/2 inch; 9595 floating bottom to 1-3/8 inch on uneven floors (the door stays on its hinges); 9245 / 9545 45-minute intumescent shoes; 9220 20-minute bottoms. Pick the kit by gap location and the time rating printed on that product -- not a one-strip-fits-all seal.

NGP GapGuard Fire Caulk

Fire Door Accessories

Fire Door Accessories: fillers, caulk, shims, and thru-bolts

Leftover hardware preps fail the same inspection as a wide head gap. HP90 fillers close mortise, flush-bolt, cylindrical, and round thru-hole cavities. GapGuard Fire Caulk seals those holes and is required with wood-door GAP90-ME and HP90-MORT / FB / CYL installs to retain the fire listing.

9275 (4-7/8 inch ASA) and 9225 (2-3/4 inch T) strike shims restore latchbolt engagement after a perimeter gap is closed. HS-1 steel hinge shims, FDTB 3/8 inch fire-door thru-bolts, and 9945EC / 9945NEC stop-extender end caps finish the steel stop.
