- Door does not latch positively when released from the open position
- Latch bolt does not fully engage the strike
- Hardware is not listed for the fire rating of the assembly
- Hardware is broken, defective, or missing components

How to Catch This Before the Order Ships
During shop drawing review or pre-order submittal checking, apply this quick filter to every passage latchset on a fire-rated opening:
- Traffic volume: Is this a corridor door, stairwell, or cross-corridor path? If yes, default to Grade 1.
- Door weight: Heavy hollow metal or wood fire doors put more stress on the latch return spring. Grade 1 handles this better over time.
- Occupancy type: Schools, healthcare, and industrial applications almost always warrant Grade 1 on any fire-rated opening that sees regular use.
- Owner's maintenance program: Facilities with annual hardware inspections and quick replacement cycles can tolerate Grade 2 in low-use locations. Facilities without that infrastructure should default to Grade 1.
- Fire rating duration: Confirm that the latchset's UL 10C listing matches the required fire rating of the assembly (20-min, 45-min, 60-min, 90-min, or 3-hour). The listing must be appropriate for the labeled door.
