Why the Lock Label Alone Does Not Make the Opening Fire-Rated

- Kick plates and armor plates, if present

4. The Door Prep Must Match the Lock Specification
A cylindrical lockset has specific boring requirements: a cross-bore diameter, a latch edge bore, a backset, and sometimes a reinforcement plate or chassis. On hollow metal doors, the reinforcement must be factory-installed for the specified prep. Field modifications beyond what NFPA 80 permits can void the door label. If a door arrives from the factory prepped for one function and is modified in the field to accept a different one, the installer may be working without label authority. Cylindrical locksets are ordered by ANSI function code. For an office entry application on a fire-rated door, the function must provide positive latching at all times. - Retail and mixed-use: Tenant build-outs where the general contractor or finish sub substitutes a non-listed or lower-grade lockset to hit budget. The fire door inspection at certificate of occupancy often catches this.
- Industrial and light manufacturing: Stairwell and corridor doors where hardware is replaced piecemeal over time. A replacement cylindrical lockset installed without verifying the UL listing breaks the assembly compliance chain.
