When a Passage Latchset Ends Up on a Fire Door
A passage latchset looks simple: no key, no thumbturn, just a lever that retracts a latch. But once that latchset goes on a fire-rated opening, the conversation changes fast. This guide is for specifiers, commercial contractors, and facility managers who have inherited a door schedule with a Grade 2 passage latch called out on a labeled door and need to know whether that spec will hold up to inspection, an Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) review, or a NFPA 80 annual inspection.
The short answer: a Grade 2 passage latchset can legally sit on a fire-rated opening if it carries the right UL listing. But a BHMA grade alone tells you nothing about fire compliance. Getting that distinction wrong is one of the most common quiet errors on door schedules across schools, healthcare corridors, and light industrial buildings.
What a Passage Latchset Actually Does on a Fire Opening
A passage latchset provides positive latching without any locking function. The latch retracts from either side by turning the lever. On a fire-rated door, this function satisfies the NFPA 80 requirement for positive latching: the door must latch when it closes, holding it in the frame so it can perform its compartmentalization role in a fire event.
What it does not do is lock the door. If the opening requires access control or lockdown capability, a passage latchset is the wrong function entirely. That is a separate specification decision, but it is worth flagging before a chase-the-punch-list call happens at substantial completion.
BHMA Grade vs. UL Listing: Two Different Conversations
This is where door schedules go quietly wrong. Here is what each designation actually means:
- BHMA Grade (Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3) describes mechanical performance: cycle count, pull strength, finish durability. Grade 1 is heavy-duty commercial; Grade 2 is standard commercial; Grade 3 is residential.
- UL Listing (such as UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test) describes whether the product has been independently tested and found acceptable for installation on a fire-rated door assembly.
A Grade 1 latchset without a UL 10C listing cannot go on a fire door. A Grade 2 latchset with a UL 10C listing can. The grade tells you how long the hardware will last under use; the UL listing tells you whether it is allowed on the opening at all. Mixing these up is how facilities end up failing NFPA 80 inspections on hardware that looks perfectly functional.
Per NFPA 80, all hardware installed on a labeled door assembly must be listed and labeled for use on the specific fire rating required. This applies to the latchset, the closer, the hinges, and any auxiliary hardware. Missing one item breaks the assembly compliance.
Where Grade 2 Is and Is Not Appropriate
Grade 2 passage latchsets are often encountered in light commercial and institutional environments: interior corridor doors in schools, patient room doors in smaller healthcare facilities, storage rooms, and interior office suites. The BHMA training guidance for commercial work generally favors Grade 1 for durability, but Grade 2 is not a code violation on its own when the use, cycle count, and listing requirements are met.

The ANSI F75 Function Code: What It Specifies
ANSI function code F75 is the standard cylindrical passage latchset function: lever both sides, no locking, latch retracts from either lever. When you see F75 called out on a hardware schedule, it maps to a passage door with free egress and free ingress. On a fire-rated door, this is appropriate for doors that must remain unobstructed for egress but do not need to be secured against entry, such as certain stairwell re-entry doors, cross-corridor doors in some occupancy types, and interior suite doors where access control is managed at a perimeter point.
The key word is appropriate. An F75 passage latch on a rated opening is not inherently wrong. The question is whether the application, the occupancy, and the egress strategy all support a free-passage function at that specific opening.
What the Inspection Will Check
When a fire door inspector or AHJ reviews a labeled opening equipped with a passage latchset, the typical checkpoints include:
- Is the latchset listed for the door's fire rating? (UL 10C label on the hardware itself or manufacturer documentation)
- Does the latch positively engage the strike when the door is in the fully closed position?
- Is the strike properly aligned so the latchbolt does not ride on the strike lip or fail to retract on opening?
- Is there a self-closing device (closer or spring hinge) present and functional?
- Are all fasteners present and of the correct type? On labeled doors, this means hardware-manufacturer-specified fasteners, not field substitutions.
- Are there any holes from removed auxiliary hardware that have not been filled per NFPA 80 requirements?
A passage latch that looks fine but does not positively latch because the strike has shifted, the door has sagged, or the latch bolt is worn, is a deficiency under NFPA 80 and must be repaired. The fix may be a strike adjustment, a new latchset, or a hinge correction -- but it has to be documented and resolved.
Specifying Correctly From the Start

- Confirm the latchset model carries a UL 10C (positive pressure) listing for the required fire rating of the opening -- 20-minute, 45-minute, 60-minute, or 90-minute assemblies each have their own listing requirements
- Verify that the closer or self-closing device on the same opening is also UL-listed for that rating
- Confirm the hinge specification is fire-door listed (for most commercial fire doors, this means full mortise or full surface hinges with the appropriate listing)
- Check that the BHMA grade called out is consistent with the actual traffic demand of the opening, not just the minimum acceptable grade
- If the opening is also on an accessible route, verify that the lever meets ADA requirements for one-hand operation without tight grasping or twisting, and that the opening force does not exceed the applicable limit

When all three align with the opening's fire rating, occupancy, and access control strategy, the specification is clean. When any one of them is assumed rather than verified, the problem shows up at inspection -- or worse, in a fire event.
