A Grade 1 closer installed on the wrong setting can fail the 5-pound opening-force test just as easily as an undersized unit. This guide explains exactly which closer adjustments govern accessibility on commercial doors, what the code thresholds are, and how to approach each valve systematically. It is written for facility managers troubleshooting existing doors, commercial hardware contractors dialing in new installs, and specifiers who want to understand what they are actually requiring when they write "ADA-compliant closer" on a hardware schedule.

The Two ADA Thresholds Every Closer Must Clear

Under ADA and ANSI A117.1 Section 404, interior hinged doors that are not fire-rated must meet two distinct performance benchmarks:

  • Maximum opening force: 5 pounds. This is the force a person must apply to push the door from a closed position to full open. It is measured at the latch side of the door, typically with a push-pull gauge.
  • Minimum sweep time: 5 seconds. The door must take at least 5 seconds to travel from 90 degrees open to 12 degrees from the latch (a 78-degree arc). A door that slams shut in 2 seconds fails this requirement even if the opening force is acceptable.

Both requirements must be satisfied simultaneously. Meeting one while failing the other is a non-compliant opening.

Fire-rated doors are a separate case. The 5-pound interior opening-force limit does not apply to fire doors because self-closing force is a life-safety requirement under NFPA 80. Fire doors must close and positively latch on every cycle. On fire-rated accessible openings, the sweep-time requirement still applies, but opening force is governed by the AHJ and the listing, not the 5-pound ADA threshold.

Which Valve Controls What -- And Why That Matters in the Field

Most commercial Grade 1 closers control three or four separate functions through individual adjustment valves, typically operated with an 1/8" allen wrench. Understanding which valve to reach for is the difference between a ten-minute fix and a closer that stays out of compliance after every service call.

Closing Speed Valve

Controls how fast the door moves from the fully open position down to approximately 8 inches from closed. Turning this valve to slow the closing cycle helps achieve the 5-second sweep-time requirement. Start here when a door is closing too quickly overall.

Latching Speed Valve

Controls the final 8 inches of door travel -- the last portion of the swing before the latch engages. This valve must be balanced carefully: too slow and the door stops short of latching; too fast and the door slams at the end of its travel. On fire doors, positive latching on every cycle is a NFPA 80 requirement, so do not back this valve off to the point where the door fails to latch reliably.

Spring Tension (Closing Force)

The spring adjustment sets the overall closing power and is the primary driver of opening force at the door face. On a standard arm closer, there may also be a foot-pivot leverage adjustment that adds approximately 15 percent additional closing power without changing the spring setting. For ADA compliance, spring tension should be set to the minimum that still reliably closes and latches the door. Reducing spring tension is the most direct way to bring opening force down toward the 5-pound limit.

Backcheck Valve

Backcheck activates at approximately 70 degrees of the opening swing and slows the door to prevent it from slamming into the door stop or adjacent wall. Backcheck does not affect closing force or sweep time and is not an ADA adjustment -- but it protects the door, frame, and closer from impact damage. A closer with no backcheck is not a door stop and should never be used as one.

Delayed Action (Where Equipped)

Delayed action is a separate, optional valve that holds the door in the open position for a period (typically a minimum of 20 seconds on closers that offer it) before the normal closing cycle begins. It is often described as an ADA accommodation for wheelchair users and people moving through doorways with carts or medical equipment -- common in healthcare corridors, school hallways, and retail stockroom entries. However, delayed action is not required by ADA or A117.1. It is a convenience feature. The code requires sweep time and opening force; delayed action is an enhancement, not a mandate.

Closer Sizing and ADA: Getting the Size Right Before You Adjust

No amount of valve adjustment will produce ADA-compliant opening force if the closer is the wrong size for the door. An oversized closer running at minimum spring tension on a 36-inch interior door may still exceed 5 pounds. The sizing chart matters.

  • A 34-to-36-inch interior door typically calls for a Size 3 closer on a regular or top-jamb mount.
  • Parallel arm mount is mechanically less efficient than regular arm -- the same door may need one size larger in parallel arm configuration to close reliably, which then makes ADA force compliance harder. Factor this into the specification.
  • Exterior doors have no ADA opening-force maximum under federal ADA, but state and local accessibility codes may impose limits. Power-assist operators are the practical solution for exterior entries where 5 pounds is impossible to achieve with a conventional closer against wind and stack pressure.

Closer Selection for ADA-Compliant Openings

For openings that must meet ADA A117.1, specify a Grade 1 closer with independent, captivated valves for closing speed, latching speed, and backcheck -- and confirm the manufacturer's ADA compliance listing. Not all closers in a manufacturer's catalog carry the same ADA certification. Grade 2 closers may have a restricted adjustment range that makes the 5-pound target difficult to achieve consistently across the full door-weight range.

  • Opening force at or below 5 lbs: compliant
  • Sweep time at or above 5 seconds (90 deg to 12 deg): compliant
  • Door latches positively on every cycle: required on all doors, mandatory on fire doors
