ADA Closer Spring Force: The Field Adjustment That Determines Whether Your Door Passes or Fails

What Is Closer Spring Force?

A door closer works through two systems working together: a spring that stores energy to pull the door closed, and hydraulic valves that control the speed of that closing motion. Spring force -- sometimes called spring power or spring size -- determines how hard the door pushes back against the person opening it. It is not the same as sweep speed or latching speed, which are set by separate valves. Spring force is the resistance a person feels from the moment they begin pushing or pulling until the door is fully open.

That resistance is what ADA Section 404.2.8.1 regulates.

The ADA Rule: 5 lbf Maximum on Interior Doors

Under the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, interior doors on accessible routes -- including restroom doors, classroom doors, patient room doors, and corridor doors -- must not require more than 5 pounds of force (lbf) to open. That limit applies to the door itself, not just the hardware trim. A lever handle rated for one-handed operation still fails if the closer spring is cranked to a Size 5.

The Second ADA Closer Rule: Closing Time

Spring force is only half the equation. ADA Section 404.2.8.1 also requires that a closer allow the door to take at least 5 seconds to travel from 90 degrees open to a point 12 degrees from the latch. This is a minimum -- the door must close slowly enough for a person using a wheelchair, walker, or crutches to clear the opening without the door striking them. This is controlled by the sweep speed valve, but spring force interacts with it: a higher spring setting makes it harder for the sweep valve to slow closing motion adequately.

How Closer Size and Spring Adjustment Relate

ANSI/BHMA A156.4 defines door closer sizes from 1 (lightest) through 6 (heaviest). Most Grade 1 commercial closers are factory-preset at Size 3 and are field-adjustable across the full range. The size you select -- and how the spring is subsequently adjusted -- directly controls whether the door can be opened within the 5 lbf limit.

  • Interior doors on accessible routes: Size 1 to 3 is the typical target range. Always verify with a force gauge after adjustment -- spring power interacts with door width, weight, and weatherstripping friction.
  • Exterior doors: The ADA does not set a maximum opening force for exterior doors, recognizing that wind load, door weight, and weather seals make compliance impractical without power-assist operators. Where ADA access is required at an exterior opening, a low-energy automatic operator is the reliable solution.
  • Fire-rated doors on accessible routes: These doors must self-close and latch, which sometimes requires a higher spring setting than an unrated door. The 5 lbf limit still applies, but the closer must also guarantee positive latching. This tension is real -- and worth flagging in the spec before the opening gets built.

Where Facilities Get This Wrong

The most common field failures are not bad products -- they are adjustment errors or size mismatches made during installation and never revisited.

  • Spring set too high after install: An installer sets the spring at Size 4 for positive latching, then never reduces it after confirming the latch catches reliably.
  • Weatherstripping added after closer adjustment: A new door sweep or perimeter seal adds friction. The closer that passed at 4.5 lbf before the sweep went on now reads 6.5 lbf. The KB-5.8 installation principle is clear: weatherstripping creates resistance that must be accounted for when setting closers.
  • Parallel arm mounting at a higher spring equivalent: Parallel arm (top jamb) installation is mechanically less efficient than regular arm mounting. At the same spring size setting, a parallel arm installation may require more opening force than a regular arm setup. This is not a defect -- it is physics -- but it means the spring must be set lower to hit the same lbf result at the door edge.
  • No force gauge verification: Closer size is a starting point, not a compliance certificate. A calibrated door force gauge at the leading edge of the door (at handle height) is the only way to confirm the number.

Classroom and restroom doors are high-traffic accessible openings where the 5 lbf rule matters every day. Closers on these doors are adjusted and readjusted by maintenance staff over years -- spring creep and valve drift are real. Build an annual force-check into the preventive maintenance schedule.

Patient room doors and corridor doors on egress paths combine fire-rated door requirements with ADA access.
