Why Mounting Position Is One of the First Closer Decisions You Make
This article explains the practical differences between pull-side and push-side door closer mounting, when each position is appropriate, and how the choice affects arm selection, mechanical efficiency, and wall clearance. Closer mounting position is not an afterthought. Choosing the wrong side of the door creates wall interference, reduces mechanical efficiency, or forces an arm configuration the opening cannot physically support. Getting this decision right at the specification or take-off stage prevents costly field changes.
What Pull-Side and Push-Side Mounting Actually Mean
Pull-side mounting places the closer body on the same face of the door that a person pulls toward them when opening. On a standard single-acting door, that is the hinge side of the opening. The closer body mounts on the door surface and the foot bracket (also called the shoe or track bracket) fastens to the frame head. This is sometimes called regular arm mounting or hinge-side door mounting.
Push-side mounting places the closer body on the face of the door that a person pushes. The arm runs parallel to the top of the door when the door is closed -- this configuration is commonly called a parallel arm mount. The body sits on the door face (push side) and the foot bracket fastens to the frame on the stop side. Some manufacturers also support a push-side frame mount (top jamb) variant where the body goes on the frame face above the door rather than on the door itself.
Pull-Side (Regular Arm) Mounting: When It Is the Right Call
Pull-side regular arm mounting is the standard installation and the most mechanically efficient position for a surface-mounted closer. The geometry of the arm in this position gives the closer its best mechanical advantage throughout the opening and closing cycle.

Key consideration: When the door opens to 90 degrees or beyond, the arm will project into the space behind the door. If a wall, column, or casework is close, the arm can contact the surface before the door reaches the intended stop angle. An auxiliary overhead stop or wall stop is always recommended to protect the closer arm and door frame -- a closer is not a substitute for a proper door stop.
Push-Side (Parallel Arm) Mounting: Solving the Wall Interference Problem
When the door opens against a wall or into a corner that would block a regular arm, parallel arm mounting on the push side is the standard solution. In this configuration the arm folds parallel to the door and frame as the door opens, so it does not project into the room behind the door.
Best applications for push-side parallel arm mounting
- Exterior doors that open against a building face -- common on storefronts, school main entries, and industrial loading areas
- Doors that swing into stairwells or alcoves where wall clearance is minimal
- Retail and public entry vestibules where the door opens nearly flat against a side wall
- Any opening where a regular arm would contact a wall, doorstop, or adjacent hardware before reaching 90 degrees
Trade-off to know: Parallel arm mounting is mechanically less efficient than regular arm mounting. For a given closer size, the unit produces less effective closing torque in parallel arm position. On heavy exterior doors or high-frequency openings -- think school main entries or industrial facility doors -- you may need to step up one closer size to maintain reliable latching, especially in cold weather when hydraulic fluid thickens slightly.

- The opening geometry requires the closer to be concealed from the pull side for aesthetic reasons

The Efficiency Gap: Why Position Affects Closer Sizing
This is the point most hardware schedules miss. The same closer body in a pull-side regular arm position versus a push-side parallel arm position does not deliver the same effective closing force. Manufacturers size recommendations typically account for this, but only if the specifier or installer knows which mounting position the schedule calls for. When a hardware set lists a closer size without specifying the arm type and mounting position, field crews make assumptions -- and assumptions lead to doors that do not latch reliably.
Specify both the closer body and the arm configuration. If a parallel arm is required, note it explicitly and confirm the sizing recommendation accounts for that position.
ADA Opening Force and Mounting Position
ADA guidelines limit interior door opening force to 5 lbf. Closer sizing adjusted to that threshold may produce marginal latching force regardless of mounting position, but the problem is more pronounced in parallel arm configurations where mechanical efficiency is lower.
