Valves on quality closers are designed to be captivated, meaning they cannot be completely removed from the body in the field. But over years of adjustment, valve o-rings and seats can degrade, especially in environments with temperature swings, chemical cleaning agents, or heavy UV exposure. A valve seat leak typically produces a small, localized weep of fluid directly around the valve port. The fluid appears at the adjustment point itself.

Cracked Body Leak

A crack that has propagated far enough will drain the entire fluid charge, leaving the closer with spring force only and no hydraulic control at all.

On a Grade 1 commercial closer, the sweep speed valve controls travel from the open position down to roughly the last 8 to 10 inches of swing. The latching speed valve controls that final section. If either valve has drifted open, perhaps from vibration in a high-traffic corridor, the door will close faster than intended. Try adjusting the relevant valve clockwise in small increments before condemning the unit. This is a five-minute fix with an allen wrench and no parts cost.
Facilities that see frequent drift on valve settings should note whether the valves are captivated and whether they include any locking mechanism. - Valve cause: Latching speed valve set too slow, or delayed-action valve (if equipped) not returning to neutral. Adjust latching speed valve counterclockwise in small increments until door latches consistently.
- Spring cause: If the door barely moves under its own weight and valve adjustments have no effect, the spring may be broken or the body has lost enough fluid that the piston is no longer tracking. This is a replacement scenario.
- Backcheck overset: A backcheck valve adjusted too aggressively can create enough resistance at the opening cycle that the door rebounds before latching. Back the backcheck valve off slightly and retest.

- Fluid at a valve port, door still moves somewhat normally: Try re-seating the valve. If seeping continues, body replacement is likely needed.
- Fluid along a body seam or casting surface: Replace the body. No field repair exists for a cracked casting.

- No hydraulic resistance after full valve adjustment: The body has lost its fluid charge. Replace the body.
