Norton 1601 Surface Door Closer — Tri-Pack, Adjustable Sizes 1–6
The Norton 1601 is a commercial-grade, cast aluminum surface-mounted door closer from Norton's 1600 Series — a proven aluminum storefront closer line designed for high-traffic applications. Rated ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, the 1601 features a fully adjustable spring power range of sizes 1 through 6, making it suitable for a wide variety of door sizes and weights up to 250 lb. This listing is the Tri-Pack configuration, which supports regular arm, top jamb, and parallel arm mounting in a single unit — eliminating the need to order separate arm packages for different conditions.
The closer body is non-handed, simplifying field installation and inventory management. Its rack-and-pinion mechanism with a 1-3/8 in (35 mm) piston and 5/8 in pinion journals delivers smooth, consistent closing force. A 2-7/8 in projection keeps the closer profile low on the door face. Three independent adjustment valves — latch, sweep, and backcheck — allow precise tuning of closing speed and door-check behavior without interaction between circuits, a critical feature for code-compliant and ADA-friendly installations.
Spring size adjustability means the 1601 can be dialed in to meet ADA opening-force requirements on accessible routes, supporting compliance with ICC A117.1 and ADA Standards for Accessible Design where interior door opening force must not exceed 5 lbf.
Key Features & Benefits
- ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 Rated: Meets the highest commercial durability standard for door closers — built for demanding, high-cycle environments.
- Tri-Style Mounting: One package supports regular arm, top jamb, and parallel arm installations, reducing parts complexity on multi-condition projects.
- Adjustable Sizes 1–6: Full spring power range in a single closer body; field-adjustable to match door width, weight, and opening-force requirements.
- Non-Handed Design: Installs on hinge side or pull side of left-hand or right-hand doors without modification.
- Independent Valve Circuits: Separate latch, sweep, and backcheck valves allow precise, non-interactive speed tuning for code compliance.
- Cast Aluminum Body: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant housing with a 2-7/8 in projection for a low-profile appearance on aluminum storefront and hollow metal doors.
- ADA-Adjustable: Spring tension can be reduced to comply with ADA and ANSI A117.1 opening-force thresholds on accessible door openings.
- 250 lb Door-Weight Rating: Engineered for heavy commercial doors commonly found in retail, office, and institutional applications.
- 30-Year Limited Warranty: Norton backs the 1600 Series with a 30-year limited warranty, reflecting long-term product confidence.

Closer Adjustments
Use the hex wrench supplied with the closer. Never force valves out of the closer. Never completely close the backcheck valve. The door must be open to adjust spring power. Do not use a power drill -- that voids the warranty. Do not remove the valves; removal causes a fluid leak.
