What Is UL 10C? A Working Definition
UL 10C is the Standard for Positive Pressure Fire Tests of Door Assemblies. Under positive pressure, hot gases and combustion products actively push against the door, trying to force through any gap or weak point in the assembly.

The Label on the Frame Is Not the Same as the Label on the Door
One source of field confusion: doors and frames carry separate labels, and the UL 10C positive pressure designation must appear on both. Frame manufacturers have handled this transition differently. Some incorporated the positive pressure compliance mark directly into the primary frame label; others required a supplemental label to be affixed. If you are sourcing frames and doors separately, confirm that both carry current positive pressure certification before the opening is assembled. A door with a UL 10C label installed in a frame with only a neutral-pressure certification does not constitute a compliant assembly.
Similarly, every accessory applied to the opening -- lite kits, gasketing, door bottoms, thresholds, and hardware -- must be listed for use on a positive-pressure fire-rated assembly. The weakest-listed component sets the ceiling for the whole opening.
Where Specifiers and Installers Get Into Trouble
Mixing Neutral- and Positive-Pressure Listed Components
Lite kits tested only to UL 10B (neutral pressure) are still manufactured and sold. They are appropriate for specific applications, but they cannot substitute for UL 10C listed frames on a positive-pressure rated opening. Verify the listing on every vision lite frame specified or ordered.
Omitting the Glazing Tape Upgrade
A common field error: installers use whatever glazing tape is on hand rather than the tape specified for the rating period and test method. The correct tape for a UL 10C 45-minute assembly differs from the correct tape for a UL 10C 20-minute assembly. The lite kit manufacturer's installation instructions specify which tape is required to maintain the listing.
Improper Door Bottom Selection
An excessive undercut at the door bottom -- even a few extra sixteenths of an inch -- can push the opening outside the certified parameters. Intumescent door shoes rated for UL 10C positive pressure applications are designed for specific maximum gap ranges. Exceeding that range requires a different product or a correction to the door prep, not an improvised shimming solution.
Hardware Not Evaluated for the Assembly
Exit devices used on fire-rated openings must be fire exit hardware -- mechanically dogged devices are not permitted because the latch must project automatically upon activation of a fire alarm or loss of power. Closers must ensure the door latches positively every cycle. These are not preferences; they are NFPA 80 requirements that feed directly into the integrity of the UL 10C assembly.
