UL 1784 Smoke Leakage Compliance Basics: What Every Specifier Needs to Know Before the Door Gets Labeled

What Is UL 1784?

ANSI/UL 1784 is the Air Leakage Tests of Door Assemblies standard. It measures how much air -- and by extension, smoke -- passes through a closed door assembly under a defined pressure differential. It is not a fire endurance test. Instead, it is a leakage test that is layered on top of a fire test to produce an assembly that resists both flame spread and smoke migration.

In plain language: a door can hold back fire without doing much to slow smoke. UL 1784 is what closes that gap.

The Passing Threshold You Need to Know

To comply with UL 1784, an assembly must not allow air leakage exceeding 3.0 cfm per square foot of door opening at 0.10 inch of water column pressure. That test is run at two conditions:

  • Ambient temperature -- simulating normal building conditions
  • 400 degrees F -- simulating elevated temperatures during a fire event

Both conditions must be met. An assembly that passes at ambient but fails at elevated temperature does not earn the listing. This dual-temperature requirement is why standard weatherstripping cannot substitute for listed smoke gasketing -- the materials must perform under heat, not just in normal use.

The S Label Is Separate from the Fire Rating Label

This is the single most common misunderstanding in door scheduling. A door carrying a 90-minute fire rating label is certified to resist flame and heat for that duration. It is not automatically certified for smoke and draft control. The S label is a distinct certification that must appear in addition to the fire rating label for an opening to legally qualify as a smoke-and-draft-control assembly.

Under IBC and NFPA 105, smoke barrier doors and certain corridor doors in healthcare occupancies require both labels. Specifying a fire-rated door without confirming the S label requirement is on the schedule is a compliance gap that shows up at inspection -- or worse, after occupancy.

What Category H Gasketing Has to Do With It

Earning the S label requires Category H smoke and draft control gasketing. Category H products are surface-applied to the door frame and sometimes the door itself. They are tested and listed to comply with both UL 10C (the positive-pressure fire test) and UL 1784 (the air leakage test).

Key rules for Category H compliance:

  • Installation must follow ANSI/NFPA 105
  • Every component of the assembly -- door, frame, gasketing, hardware, and accessories -- must be UL 1784 listed; mixing unlisted components breaks the certification
  • Some Category H gasketing is certified for general use across a door type family; other products are manufacturer-specific -- always verify the individual product listing
  • Assemblies may be field-installed (the most common scenario) or factory-assembled

Category H is distinct from Category G (edge sealing for positive-pressure fire tests) and Category J (general gasketing for weatherstrip, sound, or light). Category J products have not been evaluated to contribute to a fire or smoke rating and cannot be used as substitutes for Category H materials on a labeled opening.

UL 1784 compliance is not limited to specialty projects. It surfaces routinely in:

  • Healthcare construction -- smoke barrier doors separating patient care areas require S-labeled assemblies; NFPA 101 and NFPA 105 both apply in hospital and nursing home work
  • School facilities -- corridor fire doors in educational occupancies often require smoke control in addition to fire ratings, particularly under IBC provisions for smoke compartmentalization
  • Retail and commercial buildings -- exit corridor doors and stair enclosure doors in multi-tenant buildings may trigger smoke-and-draft requirements depending on occupancy and sprinkler status
  • Industrial and warehouse facilities -- cross-corridor fire doors in large unsprinklered or partially sprinklered buildings may require S-labeled assemblies at the authority having jurisdiction's discretion

What Happens When the Assembly Is Not Fully Listed

A common field problem is a correctly listed door paired with gasketing that was not part of the tested assembly. Even if the gasket material looks and functions identically to a listed product, the substitution can void the listing. Inspectors reviewing fire door assemblies under NFPA 80 and NFPA 105 are trained to check labels and installation against the listing documentation. An unlisted substitute means the opening does not qualify as smoke-and-draft rated regardless of how well it seals in practice.

This matters for facilities teams doing maintenance replacements as well. When a smoke seal gasket wears out and needs to be replaced, the replacement must be the same listed product or a listed equivalent -- not a generic weatherstrip pulled from stock.

Specifying Compliant Smoke Gasketing: What to Look For

When building a door schedule or reviewing submittals, confirm the following for any opening required to carry an S label:

  • The gasketing product is explicitly listed under UL 1784 Category H (not just Category J or G alone)
  • The product listing covers the door type in use -- hollow metal, wood, or both
  • The same listing covers the fire rating required (20-minute, 45-minute, 60-minute, 90-minute, or 3-hour)
  • Perimeter coverage is complete -- head, strike jamb, and hinge jamb are all addressed
  • The door bottom treatment (automatic door bottom or threshold combination) is also listed as part of the smoke assembly

Brands such as Pemko and Hager offer Category H gasketing product families with BHMA certification and published UL listings for both hollow metal and wood fire doors across multiple rating levels. Products like the Pemko S44, S88, and S442 series carry dual smoke-and-fire listings and have been tested to UL 1784 and UL 10C, meeting the 3.0 cfm per square foot threshold at both ambient and elevated temperatures.

The Bottom Line for Compliance

UL 1784 is the standard; the S label is the proof; and Category H gasketing with a fully listed assembly is how you get there. Confirm the listing at the product level, confirm it covers your door type and rating, and confirm every component in the opening is part of the same listed assembly. If any one of those checks fails, the opening is not smoke-and-draft rated -- regardless of what the door schedule says.
