A keyed removable mullion does not work with any exit device on the shelf. The exit devices on both leaves must be specifically compatible with the mullion model. Incompatible combinations result in latch engagement problems, gaps at the meeting stile that violate NFPA 80 clearance rules, or a mullion that cannot be removed cleanly.

- Strike type: The exit device strike must be matched to the mullion. Fire-rated windstorm mullions typically require a specific strike (such as a 757F-type windstorm strike) rather than a standard rim strike.

Annual Inspection Reality: The Mullion Is a Moving Part
Under NFPA 80, fire door assemblies require an annual inspection. A keyed removable mullion is a moving component and must be evaluated as such. Inspectors and facility managers should check:
- The mullion seats fully and positively in both the top and bottom retainers when locked in place
- The cylinder operates smoothly and the lock cam engages completely
- The exit device latches engage cleanly into the mullion strike without excessive travel
- Clearances at the meeting stile meet NFPA 80 requirements (no more than 1/8 inch at the meeting stile for fire doors)
- The mullion label is present and legible
A mullion that is sticky to remove or that wobbles in the frame is not a cosmetic problem -- it is a functional deficiency on a life safety component. Address it before the next inspection cycle, not after a failed report.
