Sectional Trim
Sectional trim -- a separate rose on each side of the door with a spindle running through -- gives more flexibility in mixed-function openings and is easier to rehand in the field if the door hand was recorded incorrectly on the schedule. The outside trim ships handed from the factory. The inside trim on PDQ MR series is not handed from the factory, which is a useful detail: the rose thru-bolt holes seat at 12 and 6 o'clock, and the installer rotates the spindle clockwise or counterclockwise to set the hand at installation.
Where sectional trim causes trouble is with the hold-back thumb piece. The thumb piece is a separate component secured with small truss-head screws, and it sits in a precise location relative to the spindle centerline. If the rose is seated even slightly off-axis because the door prep cross-bore is not centered correctly, the thumb piece will bind before it reaches the hold-back detent. The hold-back function appears to work intermittently, and the crew writes it up as a defective lock. More often than not, it is a prep problem.
The Strike Is Handed -- And Frequently Ordered Wrong
On mortise lock installations, the strike plate is handed: the bolt hole is offset toward the top of the strike on a standard installation. This is not obvious from a photo in a catalog, and it is easy to miss on a hardware schedule that lists only the lock function and finish. If the strike arrives for the wrong hand -- or if an installer flips it assuming it is symmetric -- the latch bolt will not align cleanly with the strike pocket. The door may appear to latch, but under load the bolt tip catches on the lip of the strike and the hold-back function loses its purpose entirely because the latch drags every cycle.

Single Cylinder Hold-Back vs. Double Cylinder: A Code and Security Note
A single cylinder hold-back function allows the inside lever or thumb piece to engage the hold-back without a key. A double cylinder configuration requires a key on both sides to operate the deadbolt -- relevant where security of a storeroom or classroom must be maintained even when the latch is held back for passage. On fire-rated openings, always verify that the lockset function and cylinder configuration are permitted under the applicable listing. A hold-back function that allows the latch to remain retracted may conflict with positive latching requirements on fire doors depending on the occupancy and fire door assembly listing. When in doubt, review with the authority having jurisdiction before specifying.
Finish Compatibility and Lead Time Planning
