The Industrial Propped-Open Workaround
In warehouse and manufacturing environments, the hold-back is sometimes treated as a substitute for a proper door holder. Workers engage the latch retraction and assume the door is being held open. Without an independent mechanical or electromagnetic hold-open, the door is free to swing on air currents or drafts. A door that closes unexpectedly on a forklift aisle, a pedestrian pinch point, or a fire-rated separation is a maintenance and liability problem waiting to happen.
Fire-Rated Door Pairs
This is the highest-risk scenario. On rated door pairs — especially in hospital corridor separations and school compartmentalization walls — a mortise lock with hold-back that is left engaged means the active leaf is not positively latching. NFPA 80 requires that fire doors be maintained in a closed and latched condition unless held open by an approved electromagnetic release device tied to the fire alarm system. Hold-back on a mortise lock is a legitimate and useful feature in specific, narrow applications:
- Receiving docks and service entries where deliveries require repeated free-swing access during a defined time window, after which the door is re-secured by key.
- Retail back-of-house doors during stocking hours, where staff control the hold-back period and close it out before the building reopens.
- Non-rated interior doors on low-occupancy corridors where no life-safety classification applies and the opening schedule has been reviewed for egress compliance.
- Doors without closers where the latch hold-back is used for ease of passage and the door does not self-close into a code-relevant position.
Even in these cases, the hold-back should be in the hardware set deliberately — not added after the fact because staff found it convenient.
What to Specify Instead When Free-Swing or Hold-Open Is the Real Goal
If the operational need is a door that stays physically open during certain periods, the hold-back function on the mortise lock is the wrong tool. The right approach depends on the door classification and the facility type:
- Non-rated doors: A friction hold-open arm on the door closer, a wall- or floor-mounted door holder, or a surface-mounted electromagnetic holder on a timer circuit can all hold the door open reliably without affecting the lock function.
- Fire-rated doors: The only compliant hold-open method is an electromagnetic holder or closer-holder combination device that releases automatically on fire alarm signal. - Is this opening fire-rated? If yes, the hold-back function must be removed or the hold-open method changed to a compliant electromagnetic device.

- Is this a door on an egress path? If yes, confirm that the hold-back engaged state does not create an unlocked condition that conflicts with occupancy or access control requirements.
- Who will operate the hold-back in the field, and how will it be re-secured? If there is no defined procedure, the function will be misused.
