Push plates are typically available in two gauges:

  • .125" (heavy gauge): Used in high-abuse environments -- industrial facilities, institutional corridors, loading areas. Stainless steel in .125" is the go-to spec for corridors subject to cart traffic or frequent cleaning with aggressive agents.

The DHI standard is clear: always specify the gauge on the schedule. Listing "push plate" without a thickness leaves the substitution open to the lowest-cost option, which may not hold up in service.

Materials and Finishes

Push plates are manufactured in aluminum, brass, bronze, and stainless steel. Match the base material and finish to the rest of the door hardware set -- hinges, pulls, and closer covers should all read as a coordinated family.

  • 628 / US28 -- Satin aluminum (most common in schools and institutional work)
  • 630 / US32D -- Satin stainless steel (healthcare, high-end commercial)
  • 605 / US3 -- Polished brass (hospitality, historic)

Push Plates and Pull Plates: Completing the Opening

A push plate on the push side is almost always paired with a door pull on the pull side. The hardware schedule should call out both items together as a coordinated set. For high-traffic openings, a push/pull combination plate -- a single assembly that carries a pull on one side and a flat push surface on the other -- simplifies both the schedule and the installation.

For accessibility, note that ADAAG requires operating hardware to be mounted no higher than 48 inches above finished floor. A push plate does not by itself constitute accessible hardware, but it must not obstruct an accessible pull or lever on the opposite face.

Mounting Methods: Hollow Metal vs. Wood Doors

Mounting type matters and should be called out explicitly on the schedule:

  • Standard mount (hollow metal doors): Through-bolt with machine screws and countersunk washers -- the typical commercial installation.
  • Wood door mount: Concealed or surface sheet metal screws, sometimes with a reinforcing plate behind the door face.
  • Glass door mount: Requires vinyl or metal washers and the correct bushing; not all push plate models are available for glass.
  • Scotch Mount / tape mount (no-hole option): Available for light-duty applications where drilling is not possible -- decorative use only, not recommended for high-traffic commercial openings.
