What Is a Kick Plate?

A kick plate is a flat protective plate mounted on the push side of a door, typically at the bottom, to shield the door surface from foot traffic, carts, and daily wear. It is the most common type of door protection plate and is standard on any door equipped with a self-closing device. Where the door sees heavier abuse, a taller armor plate or stretcher plate is used instead.

Standard Height Ranges

There is no single mandated kick plate height that applies to every opening. The industry-recognized range runs from 6 inches to 16 inches tall, with 8 inches being the most common standard specification for commercial applications. Taller options at 10 and 12 inches are appropriate where cart or gurney traffic is frequent but a full armor plate is not required.

  • Mop plate: 4 to 6 inches tall -- light protection from cleaning equipment, common in restrooms and service corridors
  • Kick plate: 6 to 16 inches tall -- standard push-side protection, most commercial openings
  • Stretcher plate: typically 34 to 48 inches tall -- used where beds or carts make contact at mid-door height, common in healthcare
  • Armor plate: 34 to 48 inches tall, push side -- heavy institutional use, operating rooms, double-egress corridors, storage areas with high cart traffic

Always verify the door elevation detail before specifying height. Stop height, louver cutouts, lock preparations, and vision lite frames can all limit where the plate sits and how tall it can run.

Width Rules for Single Doors and Pairs

Width is calculated relative to the door leaf, not the frame opening. The standard rules are:

  • Push side: plate width equals door width minus 2 inches
  • Pull side (when specified): plate width equals door width minus 1-1/2 inches

On door pairs, each leaf gets its own plate sized to that leaf. If an astragal is present, confirm there is no interference at the meeting edge before the order is placed.

Gauge and Material Selection

Gauge choice should match the expected abuse level and the base material of the door:

  • .050-inch metal: standard duty, appropriate for most commercial wood and hollow metal doors -- the workhorse of the category
  • .062-inch metal: heavier duty, often called out on institutional projects where traffic is sustained
  • .125-inch metal: extra heavy duty, industrial or high-abuse environments; available in aluminum, brass, bronze, and stainless steel
  • .060-inch plastic (Kydex or similar): break and scratch resistant, lighter weight, used where metal finish match is not required or where interior design calls for color coordination
  • .125-inch plastic: extra heavy duty plastic option for applications where metal is not preferred

Stainless steel is worth specifying in food service, healthcare, and any corrosive environment. Brass and bronze work well in high-end architectural interiors. Aluminum is the cost-effective default. Plastic options such as Kydex PVC acrylic alloy offer break and scratch resistance and come in neutral institutional colors including beige, gray, brown, and black.

Always specify both the material and the gauge in the hardware schedule. A schedule that says only "kick plate, US32D" is incomplete and will generate a substitution question at the last possible moment.

NFPA 80 and Fire-Rated Openings

NFPA 80 addresses protection plates on fire-rated doors under its provisions for field-installed accessories. The key rule: field-installed protection plates on labeled doors must themselves be labeled and installed in accordance with their listing.

There is one important exception. If the top of the protection plate is no more than 16 inches above the bottom of the door, labeling is not required. This is why the 16-inch maximum is a practical ceiling for most kick plate specs on fire-rated openings -- stay at or below that height and the labeling burden goes away.

For any labeled wood door equipped with a closer, a kick plate is not just recommended -- it is a standard practice and contributes to maintaining the door's integrity under normal use conditions. Factory-installed plates are preferred on fire-rated doors because they are installed as part of the door assembly listing.

Application Guide by Facility Type

Schools

Standard 8-inch metal kick plates on push sides of corridor and classroom doors. Consider 10-inch on cafeteria and gymnasium doors where carts and equipment move frequently. Budget-conscious projects often specify .050-inch aluminum, which is appropriate for school-level traffic.

Healthcare

Patient room doors typically see at least a kick plate, often an armor plate at 34 to 48 inches where gurneys and IV carts are routine. Stretcher plates serve a similar function at a lower cost. Stainless steel is preferred in clinical areas for sanitation. Confirm that any plate spec on a fire-rated corridor door meets NFPA 80 requirements.

Retail and Commercial

Standard 8-inch kick plates in customer-facing areas, often in a finish that coordinates with the door hardware set. Satin stainless (US32D) is a common and durable choice for high-traffic retail entries.

Industrial and Warehouse

Heavy-gauge metal plates at 10 to 16 inches are appropriate where forklifts, pallet jacks, and heavy carts are common. Extra-heavy .125-inch plates and armor plates may be the better call in loading dock areas and cross-corridor industrial doors.

Getting the Spec Right

A complete kick plate specification includes: height, width (relative to door leaf), material, gauge, finish, fastener type, and any cutout requirements for locks or louvers. If the opening is fire-rated, confirm the plate's listing before it ships. If the door has an astragal, bottom seal, or threshold condition that affects the bottom clearance, note it in the schedule so the fabricator can accommodate it.
