Two Lock Bodies, One Function -- and the Choice Matters Before the Drill Touches the Door

What a Privacy Lock Function Actually Does
A privacy lock (ANSI function F19 or F21 depending on the body type) allows the occupant to lock the door from the inside -- typically by turning a thumbturn or pressing a push button -- while providing an emergency release from the outside using a small coin, flathead screwdriver, or pinhole tool. There is no keyed cylinder on the outside. The goal is occupant privacy, not security.

Mortise Privacy Lock: What It Is and When It Belongs on the Schedule
A mortise lockset installs into a pocket (the mortise) cut into the edge of the door. The lock body sits entirely inside the door. All operating components -- latchbolt, deadbolt or auxiliary bolt if present, and the hub mechanism that controls locking -- live inside that steel case.
For a privacy function in a mortise body, the inside trim drives the locking piece directly. The outside trim has no cylinder, just a fixed or inactive handle. An emergency release port is provided on the outside rose or escutcheon.
Advantages of the Mortise Body for Privacy Openings
- Grade 1 durability at the mechanism level. A mortise lockbody is engineered for high cycle counts. In a commercial restroom with heavy daily traffic -- think a school bathroom or a clinic waiting room -- a mortise body will outlast a cylindrical unit significantly.
- Trim independence. The lockbody and the trim (lever or knob, rose, escutcheon) are separate components. You can update the trim style or finish without touching the door prep or replacing the body.
- Backset and front configuration flexibility. Mortise bodies for the 8800-series family, for example, use a standard 2-3/4 inch backset and accept a range of lever and knob trim styles. The lockbody itself is consistent across many function types in the same product line.
- Long-term parts availability. A mortise body from a stable product line allows component-level service -- a worn hub, a fatigued latch spring -- without pulling the whole unit. When Mortise Is the Wrong Choice

A cylindrical lockset -- sometimes called a bored lock -- installs through a cross-bore drilled through the door face and a smaller latch bore in the door edge. The lock chassis spans the door thickness and is held by a through-bolt or similar fastener. Cylindrical privacy locks are widely available in Grade 1 and Grade 2 configurations.
Advantages of the Cylindrical Body
- Simpler door preparation -- standard 2-1/8 inch cross-bore and 1 inch latch bore are pre-drilled in most commercial hollow metal and wood doors from the factory.
- Lower initial cost and faster installation time, which matters on tenant finish projects with compressed schedules.
- Widely available in ADA-compliant lever trim configurations meeting the 5-pound maximum operating force requirement.
Limitations to Know Before You Spec It
- The locking mechanism in a cylindrical body is less robust under sustained lateral stress. On a door that gets pushed hard -- restrooms adjacent to high-traffic corridors, school bathrooms -- a cylindrical privacy lock will show wear faster than a mortise unit of the same grade rating.
- Trim and body are integrated. When the internal mechanism fails, the entire unit often needs replacement rather than a targeted part repair.
- Cylindrical bodies have less flexibility for future function changes. Switching from privacy to office function, for example, requires replacing the entire lockset rather than swapping a lockbody.
The Decision Framework: Four Questions Before You Write the Spec
Use these questions to guide the choice between mortise and cylindrical for any privacy-function opening:
- How often will the door be used? A counseling office used a few times per day is a different wear story than a public restroom used dozens of times per hour. Higher traffic favors mortise.
- Is the door already prepared? If a cylindrical prep is already in the door (common on pre-hung or pre-bored units), retrofitting to mortise means edge routing and potential door replacement. Factor that cost honestly.
- Will the function or trim need to change in the future? Facilities that anticipate repurposing rooms -- a health suite that may become an office, a counseling room that may need keyed access -- benefit from the flexibility of a mortise body that can accept a different lockbody function without changing the door prep.
- What does the hardware schedule say about finish continuity? If the rest of the building is spec'd with mortise locksets in a consistent trim line, mixing cylindrical units on privacy doors creates a visual inconsistency and a parts-stocking split that maintenance staff will notice over time.
Field Notes: Handing, Latch Adjustment, and the Emergency Release
One detail that generates callbacks on privacy mortise locks: latch handing must be set correctly before the lock is installed in the door. The latchbolt head is field-reversible, but the procedure differs depending on when the unit was manufactured. On Accentra 8800-series units shipped after March 2012, a flat blade screwdriver inserted into the cover slot is used to extend the latch, then the head is rotated to the correct handing. On earlier units, the spring plate must be depressed while pulling the latch head. Attempting to force the latch into position without following the correct procedure can damage the mechanism.
Similarly, the hubs that control lever operation must be oriented for the correct handing. The red mark on the locking piece indicates the locked side. If the hub is not rotated correctly -- a full 180 degrees -- the lock will appear to work during installation but will fail to hold the locked position under use. This is a common call-back on privacy installations in healthcare and school projects where the trim is installed quickly and not function-tested before the room is occupied.
The outside emergency release should be tested before the trim is tightened. Press or turn the inside thumbturn to the locked position, then operate the emergency release from the outside. The latch and locking piece should both return to the unlocked state. If the release does not clear cleanly, check for a misaligned hub, a latch front that is not fully seated in the edge prep, or a strike plate cutout that is causing the latch to bind before it can retract.
