The key difference is operational: on a closet-function unit, the interior trim is typically a turn or thumb-turn that can hold the latchbolt in the retracted position, allowing the door to remain unlatched while the closet is in active use. If the door has already been drilled for a lever rose, the substitution may leave exposed holes or require a cover plate.
- Hardware schedule conflicts: If the project hardware set calls for passage at a particular opening and closet-function units arrive from the distributor, the installer may not notice until trim-out. At that stage, returning product against a lead-time item can delay substantial completion.
