The Small Plate That Prevents a Big Maintenance Problem
This article explains what mop plates are, why restroom doors in schools, healthcare facilities, retail centers, and industrial buildings need them, and how to specify the right height, width, and finish before the hardware schedule ships. What Is a Mop Plate?
A mop plate is a low-profile protective plate mounted at the very bottom of a door, typically on the pull side. Its job is to shield the door face from the detergents, disinfectants, wax strippers, and moisture that contact the door during routine floor cleaning. Mop plates are distinct from kick plates and armor plates strictly by height: mop plates run 4 inches or 6 inches high, making them the shortest member of the protective plate family.
Because restroom floors are mopped daily -- sometimes multiple times a day in high-traffic buildings -- the chemical and moisture exposure at the base of a door is relentless. Wood doors absorb moisture and swell. Painted steel doors develop rust lines. Laminate faces delaminate from repeated wet contact. A mop plate stops all of that at minimal cost.
Mop Plate vs. Kick Plate vs. Armor Plate: Which Goes Where
Knowing the difference matters because the wrong plate on the wrong side of the door is a common spec error.
- Mop Plate (4" or 6" high): Pull side of the door. Also used on both sides when no kick plate or armor plate is present. Protects against cleaning chemicals and floor moisture.
- Kick Plate (8" to 24" high): Push side of the door. Guards against foot traffic and shoe scuffing. Recommended on any door fitted with a closer.
- Armor Plate (26" to 48" high): Push side, or both sides on double-acting doors. Used where carts, dollies, or beds make heavy contact -- common in healthcare corridors and industrial environments.
- Stretcher Plate (6" to 8" high): Push side where stretchers or carts make occasional contact at a lower strike zone.
In a standard restroom opening, the typical combination is a mop plate on the pull side and a kick plate on the push side. In a healthcare setting where beds or housekeeping carts pass through, the push side may step up to an armor plate instead.
Sizing a Mop Plate Correctly
Getting the dimensions wrong is the most avoidable ordering mistake. Protection plates are made to size -- they are not fixed catalog items you pull off a shelf at a standard dimension.
Height
Mop plates are typically ordered at 4 inches or 6 inches high. In facilities where mopping is aggressive or where chemical runup on the door face is visible, 6 inches is the safer choice. Anything higher moves you into kick plate or stretcher plate territory and changes the product category.
Width
Standard industry practice is to order the plate 1 inch or 1/2 inch less than the full door width. This keeps the plate edge clear of the door stop and frame face so it does not bind or interfere with the frame reveal. On a 36-inch door, that typically means ordering a 34-inch or 35-inch wide plate. Always confirm the actual door width from the door schedule -- do not assume nominal width.
Gauge and Material
Most commercial mop plates are .050-inch thick stainless steel or aluminum, though brass is available where finish matching is a priority. Stainless (finish 630) is the go-to choice in restrooms because it holds up to cleaning chemicals without tarnishing. Aluminum (finish 628) saves cost in lower-exposure applications. Plastic polyethylene plates are available where metal is not appropriate.
When mounting a brass plate against a metal door, a gasket tape is advisable to reduce electrolytic tarnishing at the contact point -- a detail worth noting in the spec.
Placement: Pull Side Logic
The reason mop plates go on the pull side rather than the push side is straightforward: the person mopping approaches the door, pulls it open, and mops toward the threshold. The mop head drags across the lower face of the door on the pull side. The push side sees a foot or a shoulder, which is why it gets a kick plate instead.
In a restroom with a single-acting door and a closer, the standard specification reads:
- Push side: kick plate, 10" high x 34" wide x .050 stainless, US32D
- Pull side: mop plate, 4" or 6" high x 34" wide x .050 stainless, US32D
ADA requirements also apply here: the push side of a swinging door must have a smooth surface extending the full width of the door for the bottom 10 inches. A properly sized kick plate satisfies that requirement. The mop plate on the pull side does not need to meet the 10-inch smooth surface rule, but it should still be sized and fastened cleanly so it does not create a projection hazard.
Finish Coordination
Mop plates should match the finish family of the other hardware on the door -- closer, push/pull hardware, and any threshold. In most commercial restroom openings, satin stainless (US32D / 630) is the dominant finish and coordinates cleanly with the majority of closer and latch hardware. Where the project uses a dark bronze or brushed chrome palette, the plate finish needs to follow. A mismatch at the base of the door is visible and avoidable.

Fastening Options
Plates ship with standard mounting screws. For metal doors, TEK (self-tapping) screws eliminate the need to pre-drill. TORK head screws are available where tamper resistance matters -- relevant in public restrooms in schools, transit facilities, and correctional settings. Counter-sunk mounting holes keep the screw heads flush and reduce ledge buildup in wet areas.
