  • Inside lever always free.
  • Pro: Fastest lockdown -- no key needed by the teacher.
  • Con: Any occupant (including a student) can lock the room. Student-initiated lockdown is a recognized risk some districts want to prevent.

3. Storeroom Function (Always Locked Outside -- ANSI F86)

  • Outside lever is always locked; entry requires a key every time.
  • Inside lever always free.
  • Pro: No action needed during lockdown -- door is already locked when closed.
  • Con: Staff must carry keys for every routine entry, increasing daily friction and the risk of doors being propped open to avoid the inconvenience.

Most K-12 districts default to the classroom intruder / F110 function as their lockdown spec because it balances staff control with egress compliance. Confirm the target function with the district or owner before the hardware schedule is written -- the function determines the product, not the other way around.

Visual Indicators: Confirming Lockdown From Inside the Room

A lockset that can be locked from inside does not automatically tell the teacher whether the lock engaged. Visual status indicators address this. A lockset with an inside-only indicator (such as an option code that adds a colored window to the interior rose) shows green or red depending on the locked or unlocked state of the outside lever. During a lockdown, the teacher glances at the door and knows immediately whether it is secured -- without approaching or touching the door again.
