What Is an Interchangeable Core Cylinder?

A conventional cylinder is pinned and threaded into the lock body. To rekey it, you pull the lock or call a locksmith. An interchangeable core cylinder splits that job in two: the housing (shell) stays installed in the lock, and the core -- the figure-eight-shaped plug-and-pin assembly -- drops in and out with a single control key. Insert the control key, give it a partial turn, and the core slides free. Drop in a fresh core, turn the control key back out, and the door is rekeyed. No disassembly. No tools. No downtime.

IC cylinders are available for mortise locks, bored (cylindrical) locksets, rim exit devices, padlocks, and cam locks, making the format practical across almost every hardware category on a commercial project.

SFIC vs. LFIC: The Two Formats Compared

The industry has settled on two standard IC formats. Choosing the wrong one at the spec stage creates incompatibility problems that are expensive to fix in the field.

Small Format Interchangeable Core (SFIC)

SFIC is a standardized format -- the figure-eight core dimensions are consistent across participating manufacturers, which means cores from one manufacturer can (in most cases) drop into shells supplied by another. The dominant SFIC standard is the 7-pin format originally associated with Best. Most major lock manufacturers offer SFIC-compatible hardware, and many institutional key systems are built around it precisely because of that cross-vendor flexibility.

  • Core dimensions: Standardized figure-eight profile; 6-pin and 7-pin versions are common
  • Cross-manufacturer compatibility: Generally yes, when hardware is specified SFIC-ready
  • Typical applications: Schools, universities, government buildings, large office campuses
  • Key system advantage: A single master key system can span hardware from multiple manufacturers as long as all shells accept the same SFIC format

Sargent offers SFIC through its 7300-series cores. Available keyways include both proprietary (4A, 4B) and standard competitor-compatible options (A through M), giving specifiers real flexibility when an existing key system is already in place.

Large Format Interchangeable Core (LFIC)

LFIC -- sometimes called Full-Size IC or FSIC -- uses a larger core that typically fits within a single manufacturer's ecosystem. The control-key mechanism operates on the same principle: a locking cam releases when the control key is turned, allowing core removal. LFIC cores are not generally interchangeable with SFIC shells or with other manufacturers' LFIC shells -- format compatibility must be confirmed before specifying.

  • Core dimensions: Larger than SFIC; manufacturer-specific in most cases
  • Cross-manufacturer compatibility: Limited -- confirm before specifying
  • Typical applications: Healthcare, institutional facilities, any project already committed to one manufacturer's key system
  • Advantage: Often supports more pin positions and more complex master key hierarchies

Sargent's 6300-series LFIC, for example, is available for mortise cylinders, rim cylinders, bored locks, exit devices, and padlocks. The 6300 keyed permanent core ships factory-keyed with masterkeying included; the disposable plastic 60-series core handles the construction phase.

Construction Keying With IC Cylinders

One of the most practical advantages of IC cylinders is the construction keying workflow. Rather than leaving permanent cores exposed during a build -- or re-coring after turnover -- the process works in three clean steps:

  1. Install temporary construction cores during the build phase. These are either disposable plastic cores (coin- or screwdriver-operated) or dedicated construction-keyed cores -- all keyed alike so subs and GC have access.
  2. All construction cores are master-keyed alike. One key covers the job site. Cores are color-coded or clearly marked to distinguish them from permanent cores.
  3. At substantial completion, the building owner's team (or the locksmith) uses the control key to pull every construction core and drop in the permanent keyed cores. The construction master key is instantly dead. No re-coring, no cylinder replacements, no rekeying fees.

ASSA provides red temporary construction cores for its IC cylinders. Sargent's 6400-series construction cores and 60-series disposable plastic cores serve the same role in that product family. Corbin Russwin offers comparable construction core options. Where IC Cylinders Make the Most Sense

IC cylinders carry a higher upfront cost than conventional cylinders. The payback comes in rekeying speed and reduced locksmith labor. These scenarios justify the investment most clearly:

  • K-12 and higher education: Staff turnover, summer rekeying cycles, and the need to rekey individual classrooms quickly after a key loss make SFIC the preferred format at most school districts.
  • Healthcare facilities: Patient privacy areas, medication rooms, and staff-only zones may need immediate rekeying after an incident. LFIC lets facilities staff respond without waiting for a service call.
  • Retail and commercial buildings: High employee turnover means frequent key control events. IC cylinders let property managers handle rekeying in-house.
  • Industrial and warehouse facilities: When a master key goes missing, the cost of re-pinning conventional cylinders across a large facility is significant. A bank of spare IC cores eliminates that exposure.
  • Multi-tenant office buildings: IC allows each tenant's space to be rekeyed independently when a tenant turns over, without touching adjacent suites.

Spec and Schedule Checklist Before You Order

IC cylinders require more upfront coordination than conventional cylinders. Before the hardware schedule ships, confirm the following:

  • Format decision: SFIC or LFIC -- and is the hardware being ordered SFIC-ready or LFIC-ready from the factory?
  • Manufacturer compatibility: If the project mixes lock brands, are all shells the same IC format? SFIC offers more flexibility here.
  • Keyway family: Select the keyway at the system level, not the product level. Mixing keyway families breaks the master key system.
  • Construction cores: Specify whether disposable plastic or keyed construction cores are needed, and order control keys separately if required.
  • Core count: Order spare cores. IC systems only deliver their full benefit if replacement cores are on the shelf when a rekeying event happens.
  • Fire-rated openings: IC cylinders installed on fire-rated doors must be listed for that assembly. A cross-reference number alone does not confirm fire-label compliance -- verify with the manufacturer.
