What Is a Cylinder Pinning Kit -- and Why Does Kit Format Matter?

A cylinder pinning kit is a packaged set of driver pins, bottom pins, master pins, springs, and related consumables used to rekey or master-key a pin tumbler cylinder. Locksmiths, institutional maintenance technicians, and commercial hardware contractors use them whenever a cylinder must be re-pinned to a new key combination -- after a key loss, a security breach, a re-keying cycle, or a master key schedule change.

The kit format matters as much as the pin contents. For Sargent large-format removable cores in classic keyways (LA, RA, HA families), pinning to a constant stack height is required. How to Match the Kit to the Cylinder

  • School facilities: Master-key schedules and periodic re-key cycles favor large bench kits or IC kits with high pin-per-pocket counts. Schools running Sargent or Corbin Russwin cylinders benefit from manufacturer-matched kits that contain genuine original pin sizes.

One More Variable: .003 vs. .005 Increment Systems

Universal pinning kits come in two increment systems. The .003 system offers finer gradation and more pin sizes, allowing closer bitting matches and more master-key levels in a complex hierarchy. The .005 system is the traditional industry standard with fewer sizes and wider spacing between increments. Both use .115-diameter pins. The choice of increment does not change which cylinder is served -- it affects how precisely the key schedule can be structured.
