A drill attack on a pin-tumbler cylinder is one of the fastest and most common forced-entry methods on commercial and institutional doors. A determined intruder with a standard power drill can destroy the plug and housing of a conventional brass cylinder in under two minutes, then rotate the cam with a flat-head screwdriver. What Is a Drill-Resistant Cylinder?

A drill-resistant cylinder is a pin-tumbler or specialized cylinder that incorporates hardened steel components -- typically anti-drill pins, hardened steel inserts in the plug or body, or case-hardened housing sections -- specifically designed to defeat the drilling attack. The drill bit contacts a hardened surface, skips or chatters, and cannot penetrate to the pin stacks or the cam in the time window a burglar will tolerate.

Drill resistance is a distinct property from pick resistance. Many high-security cylinders address both, but they require different internal features. A cylinder that is marketed as pick-resistant is not automatically drill-resistant.

  • Drilling attack -- drilling the plug or body to release the tumblers and open the lock
  • Forced-entry attack -- forcing a small cold chisel or screwdriver into the keyway and applying rotary force

UL437-listed cylinders contain hardened steel pins and drill-resistant inserts that are not present in standard commercial cylinders. This is a meaningful physical difference, not just a marketing tier. If your spec says "high security cylinder," confirm whether UL437 is required -- that phrase alone does not guarantee a listed product ends up on the opening.

Cylinder Types and Drill-Protection Compatibility

Drill-resistant cylinders are available in mortise, rim, and utility configurations. Key limitations apply:

  • Mortise cylinders with UL437 are the most widely specified for commercial locks and exit devices.
  • Rim cylinders with UL437 are available for exit devices that require a key-retracts-latch or dogging function from the secure side.
  • Interchangeable core (IC) cylinders and UL437 are generally incompatible -- the drill-resistant construction conflicts with the removable-core mechanism. Even a drill-resistant cylinder can be exposed to attack if the cylinder projects beyond the face of the lock trim.
