Delayed egress alarm modules are one of the most misunderstood options in the exit device world. Specifiers order the wrong configuration. Facilities teams inherit a system they cannot reset. Inspectors arrive and the signage is missing. This guide cuts through the confusion: what a delayed egress module actually does, where it is legally permitted, how it connects to the fire alarm system, and what to confirm before the opening is commissioned. It is written for commercial contractors, healthcare facility managers, retail construction coordinators, and the architects writing the hardware schedule.
What Is a Delayed Egress Exit Device Module?
A delayed egress alarm module is an electromechanical assembly -- either self-contained inside the exit device body or added as a plug-in insert -- that holds the door latched for a code-permitted period after the push pad is depressed, while immediately sounding an audible alarm. Once the delay cycle expires, the latch releases and the occupant can exit.
The standard delay is 15 seconds. A 30-second delay may be accepted by some jurisdictions, but it requires explicit Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) approval -- do not specify 30 seconds without confirming that in writing first.
This is not the same as access-controlled egress, where the door unlocks immediately upon a valid credential or request-to-exit signal. Delayed egress intentionally holds the door shut for a short, code-defined window. The distinction matters on the hardware schedule and in the field wiring.
Where Delayed Egress Is -- and Is Not -- Permitted
Before specifying any delayed egress product, confirm that the building and occupancy qualify. IBC and NFPA 101 both restrict where this locking arrangement can be used.
Occupancies Where Delayed Egress Is Commonly Used
- Retail and mercantile (big-box stores, grocery, clothing) -- theft deterrence at rear and side exits
- Healthcare (hospitals, nursing homes, memory care) -- wandering patient control on perimeter and unit doors
- Museums, libraries, data centers -- asset protection at secondary egress points
- Government and airport facilities -- controlled egress at monitored interior perimeter doors
- Business occupancies (B) -- server rooms, secure back-of-house corridors
Occupancies Where It Is NOT Permitted Under IBC
- Assembly (Group A) -- high-occupancy venues, theaters, arenas
- Educational (Group E) -- K-12 schools and other educational facilities
- High Hazard (Group H) -- facilities with flammable or explosive materials
If a school facility manager asks about delayed egress on a secondary exit, the answer is no under IBC. The right solution for controlled egress in a school is a different locking arrangement entirely -- and worth a separate conversation with the AHJ.
The Fire Alarm Connection Is Not Optional
This is the requirement that most projects miss in the rough-in phase. Per IBC and NFPA 101, a delayed egress system must release immediately upon activation of the building fire alarm system. The power supply feeding the delayed egress device must include a fire alarm relay circuit, so that when the FACP trips, power to the delay mechanism drops and the door goes free.
Practically, this means:
- The power supply must be UL Listed and include a fire alarm relay input
- The wiring path from FACP to power supply must be coordinated between the hardware contractor and the fire alarm contractor -- it does not happen automatically
- Loss of power (power failure) must also fail the door to the unlocked position -- these devices are fail-safe
- Once a delayed egress cycle begins, it cannot be stopped by the occupant -- only fire alarm activation or power loss overrides the countdown
A full-featured delayed egress wiring run can require up to ten conductors between the door and frame, depending on monitoring outputs selected. A basic two-wire configuration covers power only. Confirm the wire count against the device specification sheet before rough-in.
Self-Contained vs. Modular Delayed Egress Configurations
Hardware manufacturers offer delayed egress in two broad configurations:
Integrated (Self-Contained) Devices
The delay electronics, alarm sounder, and locking mechanism are all built into a single exit device chassis. The device looks like standard panic hardware from the corridor side. This approach simplifies coordination and reduces field wiring complexity. Sargent's 59- Electroguard prefix for the 80 Series and PE80 Series is one example of this approach -- the electronics ride inside the touchbar assembly.
Plug-In Module Inserts
Some platforms accept a delayed egress PC board or insert that drops into an existing exit device body. Accentra (formerly Yale) 6000 and 7000 Series devices support this approach across rim, mortise, SquareBolt, concealed vertical rod, and surface vertical rod configurations. Corbin Russwin's PED5000 and PED4000 Series offer a similar modular DELR (Delayed Egress and Electronic Latch Retraction) insert. DIP switch settings on the board control the delay duration and alarm behavior -- always verify factory defaults before commissioning.
Surface-Mount Alarm Units
For retrofit situations or lower-security applications, self-contained surface-mount alarm bars -- such as the Alarm Lock Sirenlock line -- provide a battery-powered delayed egress solution with an audible alarm and deadbolt function. The Model 715, for example, offers a 15-second delay with instant alarm and a monitoring output for remote notification. These units require a standard rim cylinder (sold separately) and do not require a hardwired power supply, though fire alarm integration capability varies by model. Confirm listing requirements and AHJ acceptance before specifying a battery-only unit on a required means of egress.
Three Commissioning Items That Fail Inspection
Even correctly specified delayed egress systems fail final inspection for predictable reasons. Before calling for the inspector:
- Missing required signage. IBC requires a sign on the door reading "PUSH UNTIL ALARM SOUNDS -- DOOR CAN BE OPENED IN 15 SECONDS" (or 30, if AHJ-approved). The sign is mandatory. The inspection fails without it.
- No emergency lighting. IBC requires emergency lighting at every delayed egress door. If the electrical sub has not confirmed coverage at that opening, coordinate before the walk-through.
- Relocking is manual, not automatic. After a delayed egress cycle completes, the door does not relock itself. A staff member with a key must manually reset the device. Facilities teams need to know this before they write their emergency procedures -- it affects both security and life safety planning.
Specifying Delayed Egress on a Hardware Schedule
When writing the opening schedule, note the following for any delayed egress opening:
- Confirm occupancy type and verify code permit with AHJ before the DD submittal
- Call out the delay duration (15 or 30 seconds) and document AHJ approval for 30-second applications
- Identify power supply with fire alarm relay -- coordinate with the fire alarm contractor early
- Specify required hinge or power transfer method (transfer hinge, door loop, or concealed transfer) for the wire run -- low in-rush current means a standard transfer hinge is typically adequate
- Confirm that outside trim will not affect the delayed egress function unless a door position switch is also specified
- Note signage requirement in the hardware set narrative
