Where the Mismatch Actually Happens
1. Proprietary Codes Ordered Without Translation
A facilities technician orders a replacement mortise cylinder using the finish code printed on the old cylinder body. That code belongs to Manufacturer A. The replacement cylinder comes from Manufacturer B, whose same numeric code means something entirely different. The result: a bright chrome cylinder sitting in a satin chrome lockset.
2. Powder Coat vs. Plated Finishes on the Same Opening
Powder coated finishes and plated finishes that share the same ANSI number are not always visually identical. A powder coated bronze closer body on the same door as a plated bronze lockset cylinder can read as two different colors under overhead lighting. 3. Cylinder Ordered Separately from the Hardware Set

Step 3: Note the Collar and Plug Face Separately If Needed
Some manufacturers offer cylinders where the collar finish and plug face finish can be specified independently. On high-visibility openings, confirm both. Mortise cylinder assemblies in particular may include a collar or cap of a different material than the plug.
