What Is a Cylinder Cam and Why Does It Matter?
A cylinder cam is the small rotating tail piece at the rear of a mortise cylinder that physically actuates the lock mechanism when the key is turned. It is not a universal part. The cam geometry -- its shape, offset angle, and rotation arc -- must match the specific lock body it is installed in. Order the wrong cam suffix, and the cylinder either will not turn, will not retract the latch, or will damage the lock internals. This is one of the most common and most preventable ordering errors in commercial hardware.
This guide is for commercial installers, facility maintenance teams, and hardware specifiers who need to match a replacement or upgrade cylinder to the correct cam for their existing lock hardware -- without pulling the lock off the door to find out.
Why Cam Selection Is a Separate Decision from Cylinder Length
Most buyers focus on cylinder length first -- and correctly so. A mortise cylinder must project the right amount through the door face to seat properly in the lock body. But length and cam are two independent variables. A cylinder that is the right length with the wrong cam is still an unusable cylinder.
Cam selection is driven by lock manufacturer and model series -- not by cylinder brand. A cylinder installed in an Adams Rite narrow-stile lock needs a completely different cam than the same cylinder body installed in a standard Sargent mortise lock, even if the cylinder length is identical.
Common Cam Types and the Locks They Serve
The following breakdown is drawn from Sargent cylinder documentation and applies broadly to mortise cylinder cam selection across manufacturers. Always verify against the specific lock model before ordering.
Standard Sargent Offset Cam (No Suffix)
This is the default cam for Sargent 8200 Series mortise locks and similar Sargent applications. When ordering a Sargent cylinder for a Sargent mortise lock with a standard function (office, storeroom, classroom, etc.), no cam suffix is required. This cam is also the default on Sargent turn-piece cylinders used in non-keyed inside functions.
Short Offset Cam (Suffix -105)
Required on the inside cylinder of double-cylinder mortise lock functions -- specifically Sargent functions 16, 92, and the 78/8216 hotel variation. The inside cylinder in these applications requires a shorter cam travel to avoid mechanical conflict with the inside case. Using a standard cam on the inside cylinder of a double-cylinder lock is a common field mistake.

Adams Rite Offset Cam Variants (-101 and -104)
Adams Rite narrow-stile locks -- common on aluminum storefront doors in retail, school corridor entries, and light commercial -- require specialized cams. Two variants exist depending on the lock model:
- Suffix -101: Adams Rite MS1850 series narrow-stile locks. Packed standard with a blocking ring.
- Suffix -104: Adams Rite models 4050, 4150, 4250, 4350, and 4070. Also packed with a blocking ring.
The blocking ring is a required component -- do not discard it. These two cams are not interchangeable between the MS1850 series and the 40xx series. Verify the Adams Rite model number before ordering.
Schlage L-Series Cam (Suffix -106)
When a Sargent or compatible cylinder is being installed in a Schlage L-series mortise lock body -- a common scenario in schools and healthcare facilities that have mixed hardware on existing projects -- the Schlage L cam is required. This cam suffix (-106) addresses the different internal geometry of the Schlage L case. Hotel Function Cam (Suffix -115 -- Limited Application)
The hotel function cam (-115) is a vertical cam engineered for limited-rotation hotel function cylinders (Sargent 78/8250, function 50). This cam is unique: it is not interchangeable with any other cam, and no other cam can substitute for it in a hotel function cylinder. Hotel function cylinders are physically different from standard mortise cylinders -- the plug rotation arc is restricted, and the 115 cam is the only cam profile that mates with it correctly.
- Available only in 1-1/4" and 1-3/8" cylinder lengths
- Not available in removable-core format
- Do not attempt to adapt another cam into a hotel function cylinder
Keyswitch Cam (Suffix -113)
Sargent 4370 Series key switches -- used in industrial panels, elevator controls, and access control applications -- require the vertical keyswitch cam (suffix -113). This is a niche application but surfaces regularly in industrial maintenance and building automation retrofits.
Cam Compatibility Across Cylinder Families: A Critical Boundary
One rule that causes expensive mistakes: cam families are not cross-compatible between cylinder types within the same brand. For example, in the Sargent Keso F1 restricted-keyway system, Keso-specific cams can only be used with Keso cylinders. Standard Sargent cams will not fit a Keso cylinder, and Keso cams will not fit a conventional Sargent mortise cylinder. If you are working within a restricted-keyway or high-security cylinder system, verify the cam family as a separate question from the cam suffix.
Similarly, removable-core (interchangeable core) cylinder formats have a narrower cam selection than fixed-core cylinders. Not every cam available for a conventional mortise cylinder is available in the removable-core version. Hotel function cams and some specialized keyswitch cams are often not offered in IC format at all.
A Practical Ordering Checklist
Before placing a cylinder order, confirm all of the following:
- Lock manufacturer and model series -- not just brand
- Lock function -- standard, double-cylinder, hotel, keyswitch
- Inside or outside cylinder position -- double-cylinder functions require different cams on each side
- Cylinder format -- conventional fixed-core vs. removable/interchangeable core
- Cylinder length -- measure from the face of the door to the back of the lock case to determine correct projection
- Key system -- the cam must be compatible with the cylinder family (Keso, V-10, standard mortise, etc.)
