Sargent 8713 ETL Surface Vertical Rod Exit Device – Classroom Lever Trim, Grade 1
The Sargent 8713 ETL is a premier Grade 1 Surface Vertical Rod (SVR) exit device designed for high-traffic commercial applications requiring secure, two-point latching. This UL305 panic-listed device (UL10C fire rated when ordered as 12-8713) features the robust ETL Classroom Lever Trim, allowing the outside lever to be locked or unlocked by key—a vital function for school safety and office security. Engineered for durability, the 8713 ensures safe egress while maintaining the integrity of single or double door openings.
Outside Trim Function: Classroom (Function 13)

The ETL outside lever on this 8713 uses the classroom function, which balances everyday convenience with a door that can be secured in seconds:
- Key Operation: A key in the outside cylinder locks and unlocks the outside lever. Staff can leave the door open for the school day, then lock it at the end of the day or during a lockdown.
- Mechanical Memory: Once unlocked by key, the lever stays unlocked until a key relocks it, so authorized staff don't need a key every time they pass through.
- Free Egress Always: Whatever the outside lever is set to, pushing the inside rail always retracts the latches so people can exit.
- Cylinder: A #41 mortise cylinder is supplied with the trim (ANSI function 08).
Heavy-Duty Security and Compliance
Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1, the Sargent 8700 series offers superior strength with its 1/2" brass, bronze, or stainless steel rods. The two-point latching system secures the door at both the top and bottom, providing enhanced protection against forced entry. This device is UL10C Fire Rated when ordered with the 12-prefix, for fire-rated openings in hospitals, universities, and government buildings. Fire-rated (12-) devices are supplied less dogging.
Precision Engineering and Versatility
The Sargent 8713 is highly adaptable, fitting wood or metal doors with a minimum thickness of 1-3/4". Whether you are outfitting an E, F, J, or G rail size, each unit provides smooth, quiet operation with a low-profile projection that minimizes obstruction. For modern security integration, this device is available with multiple electrified options, including Electric latch retraction (56- option): motor-driven remote unlatching for access control; and Request-to-exit signal switch (55- option): push rail monitoring. 55- and 56- can be combined and are available on fire-rated (12-) devices. Electrified options use ElectroLynx plug-in connectors. With electrified trim, a single QC12 electric power-transfer hinge serves both the exit device and the trim (the 56- latch-retraction timer function is not available in this combination).
