Sargent 8251 FEE Trim Storeroom Deadbolt Function Mortise Lockset
For doors opened thousands of times a year that still have to feel solid.
The Sargent 8200 Series is a heavy-duty mortise platform for commercial and institutional openings. Certified to and exceeds ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Series 1000, Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 with all standard trims. This listing is the Storeroom Deadbolt function with FEE trim -- the E lever carried on the FE Freewheeling Escutcheon.
Storeroom Deadbolt Function
How the lock behaves at the opening, stated as the catalog states it, with what each line means in practice:
- Deadbolt, Keyed Outside and Turned Inside: Key and thumbturn both retract & project the deadbolt — the deadbolt answers to the key outside and the thumbturn inside alike, so either side can throw it or withdraw it.
- The Key Works Both Bolts: Key will also retract latchbolt — besides throwing and withdrawing the deadbolt, the key also retracts the latchbolt.
- Life-Safety Free Egress: Trim inside retracts latchbolt & deadbolt simultaneously — one motion of the inside lever pulls both bolts together, so a person can leave without operating anything else first.
- Outside Lever Is Locked at All Times: Trim outside is always locked — the outside lever never retracts anything on its own; from outside, the key is what operates the lock.
- Anti-Shim Protection: Auxiliary deadlatch — a small plunger beside the latchbolt rides the strike when the door closes; with it depressed the latchbolt cannot be shimmed back with a card.
- The 8250 With a Standard Cylinder: Same as 50 function with a standard cylinder — the difference is the cylinder and what follows from it: the 8250 takes the hotel cylinder, whose standard key cannot work the deadbolt and whose emergency key is ordered separately, while this function takes a standard cylinder whose one key works both bolts.
- What the Indicator Reports: Note: Indicator shows deadbolt position only — where the indicator option is specified on this function, it reports the position of the deadbolt and nothing else.
FEE Trim Design
FEE pairs the FE Freewheeling Escutcheon (forged brass outside escutcheon, vandal-resistant trim; the outside lever swings freely down to 70 degrees in the locked position and returns automatically) with the E lever (4-1/2" (114mm) long, +/- 2" (51mm) return). The carrier is an escutcheon -- a full plate covering the lock area, a different part from a rose.
- Carrier: FE Freewheeling Escutcheon, forged brass outside escutcheon (vandal-resistant trim; the outside lever swings freely down to 70 degrees in the locked position and returns automatically)
- Lever: E lever -- 4-1/2" (114mm) long, +/- 2" (51mm) return
- Handing: Ordered handed as our standard practice; specify LH, RH, LHR or RHR when ordering.
- Accessibility: All levers meet ADA compliance for national codes. Solid forged or cast. All lever height (+/- 1/16") measurements represent total distance from door face.
- Operation: Easy operation. Only 30 degrees of lever rotation required to retract latchbolt
- Freewheeling action: This design allows the outside lever handle to swing freely, down to 70 degrees, in the "locked" mode. This eliminates resetting the trim after vandalism attempts because the lever automatically returns to its original position

Ordering & Installation
Door preparation: Free-Wheeling trim uses its own door preparation: lockbody per template 4500, trim per template 4498. It does not use the 7057 lockbody prep. Backset 2-3/4" (70mm) only. Confirm the stile before specifying: 4-1/2" (114mm) minimum stile for 7800/8200.
We list six finishes online for this trim: 626 Satin Chrome, 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, 625 Polished Chrome. Cylinder and keyway options listed online are LC (less cylinder), LA keyway, 60 (LFIC less core), 70 (SFIC less core). Sargent catalogues more of both -- if you need a finish, cylinder or keyway that is not listed here, or a door thickness other than 1-3/4" (44mm), email sales@doorwaysplus.com and we will quote it.
Keys supplied: Two, nickel silver (control key or emergency key must be ordered when required).
This trim is ordered handed -- specify LH, RH, LHR or RHR when ordering. Here we order escutcheon trim handed as a safeguard, so the hand is never in question when the lock reaches the job, and Sargent lists the freewheeling trim as easily field rehanded.
Freewheeling trim is not available in the 32 or 32D finishes.
