Sargent 8236 FEL Trim Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Built for openings that are expected to outlast several tenancies.

The Sargent 8200 Series is an extra-heavy-duty mortise platform for commercial and institutional openings. Certified to and exceeds ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Series 1000, Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 with all standard trims. This listing is the Closet function with FEL trim -- the L lever carried on the FE Freewheeling Escutcheon.

Closet Function

How the lock behaves at the opening, stated as the catalog states it, with what each line means in practice:

• Key locks and unlocks trim
• No inside trim or cylinder
• Multi-Function Lockbody: A multi-function 8200/7800 lockbody — this is the same multi-function body used across the 04, 05, 06, 13, 15, 31, 36, 37 and 38 functions, so one lockbody covers them all and a distributor stocks one case instead of several; even though this is a 36 function it uses that same body -- converting to or from it takes a Trim One Side Kit, not a new lockset.
• Anti-Shim Protection: Auxiliary dead latch — a small plunger beside the latchbolt rides the strike when the door closes; with it depressed the latchbolt cannot be shimmed back with a card.

FEL Trim Design

FEL pairs the FE Freewheeling Escutcheon (forged brass outside escutcheon, vandal-resistant trim; the outside lever swings freely down to 70 degrees in the locked position and returns automatically) with the L lever (5" (127mm) long, +/- 5/16" (8mm) return). The carrier is an escutcheon -- a full plate covering the lock area, a different part from a rose and a different door preparation.

• Carrier: FE Freewheeling Escutcheon, forged brass outside escutcheon (vandal-resistant trim; the outside lever swings freely down to 70 degrees in the locked position and returns automatically)
• Lever: L lever -- 5" (127mm) long, +/- 5/16" (8mm) return
• Handing: Handed trim; specify LH, RH, LHR or RHR when ordering.
• Accessibility: All levers meet ADA compliance for national codes. Solid forged or cast. Lever designs J, L and P have lever returns within 1/2" (13mm) or less of door face and meet California State Reference Fire Code. All lever height (+/- 1/16") measurements represent total distance from door face.
• Operation: Easy operation. Only 30 degrees of lever rotation required to retract latchbolt
• Freewheeling action: This design allows the outside lever handle to swing freely, down to 70 degrees, in the "locked" mode. This eliminates resetting the trim after vandalism attempts because the lever automatically returns to its original position

• Lock case: 12 gauge heavy duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated. Thickness 7/64" (3mm) (.109").
• Hubs and springs: Heavy duty wrought steel hubs and high carbon steel spring cartridge provide superior strength and cycle life for 8200 locks.
• Latchbolt: Latchbolt is stainless steel with 3/4" (19mm) projection one-piece, anti-friction reversible latch.
• Auxiliary deadlatch: Auxiliary Deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed.
• Fire rating: UL and cUL Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A label 4 x 10 single and 8 x 10 double (3 hour fire door) and lesser class doors, stamped letter F and UL symbol on armored front indicate listing.
• Keying: Can be masterkeyed or grand masterkeyed. Construction keying available. LA standard keyway.
• Warranty: 10 year limited mechanical, 5 year limited MELR, 2 year limited electrical. Warranty limited to replacement of lockbody.

Ordering & Installation

Door preparation: ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057. Backset 2-3/4" (70mm) only. Confirm the stile before specifying: 4-1/2" (114mm) minimum stile for 7800/8200.

Five finishes are offered on this trim: 626 Satin Chrome, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, 625 Polished Chrome. Cylinder and keyway options are LC (less cylinder), LA keyway, 60 (LFIC less core), 70 (SFIC less core).

Keys supplied: Two, nickel silver (control key or emergency key must be ordered when required). Security key systems available (Degree, Signature, Keso, Keso F1, & XC).

This trim is handed -- specify LH, RH, LHR or RHR when ordering. Here the FE Freewheeling Escutcheon is handed in its own right, so this trim is handed even with a straight lever, and a part supplied in the wrong hand cannot be corrected on site.

Freewheeling trim is not available in the 32 or 32D finishes.
