Sargent 8204 WTW Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
The Sargent 8204 WTW brings together the proven engineering of the Sargent 8200 Series mortise platform with the clean architectural presence of the WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) and W lever trim combination. Built to ANSI F07 Storeroom / Closet function, this lockset controls access by key from the outside while allowing free egress from the inside at all times — the correct operational model for storage rooms, server closets, supply rooms, and similar spaces where occupants must never be trapped. The WT escutcheon's broad plate spans the full mortise preparation area in the door face, presenting a finished, continuous surface over the cutout rather than leaving it exposed at the edges. Specified under the 8200 Series ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational and Security Grade 1 platform, the 8204 WTW is a factory-order item fulfilling institutional and commercial specifications that demand both durability and architectural coherence.
8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07 Key-Controlled Access with Always-Free Egress
The ANSI F07 function defines a single-cylinder storeroom or closet lockset: the outside trim is locked at all times and entry requires a key, while the inside lever retracts the latchbolt freely without a key or any other credential. There is no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no occupancy indicator — the 8204 is a straightforward, access-controlled latch function.
- Key-Only Outside Entry: Turning a key in the outside cylinder retracts the latchbolt; the outside trim itself is locked at all times and will not operate the latch without a valid key. This enforces access control passively — no additional action by staff is required to re-secure the door after each entry.
- Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside lever retracts the latchbolt freely at all times regardless of the locked state outside, satisfying life-safety egress requirements for occupied storerooms and closets without any secondary credential or unlocking step.
- Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: A stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch is non-handed and works in conjunction with the latchbolt to resist false-latching — the condition where the latchbolt is depressed without fully engaging the strike. Because it is non-handed, it operates correctly on both hand configurations without adjustment.
- Anti-Friction Latch and Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt with its 3/4" (19mm) throw uses an anti-friction design to reduce the force needed to pull the door closed. The lockbody itself is Sargent's multi-function platform — the same case that serves nine distinct ANSI functions — meaning replacement or re-specification to a related function does not require a new door preparation.
WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) and W Lever — Broad Plate Coverage with Wide-Bearing Lever Operation
The WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) is a full-plate escutcheon that covers the mortise preparation in the door face, presenting a continuous plate face of the plate. Paired with the W lever, whose wide bearing surface distributes grip load across the hand, the WTW trim delivers a substantial, architecturally considered appearance suited to commercial and institutional interiors.
- Plate Coverage Over Mortise Prep: The WT escutcheon spans the lock area at the door face, covering the mortise cutout and presenting a finished plate surface rather than exposing raw door material around the lock. This matters on painted or veneered stile faces where edge gaps would be visible and vulnerable to edge damage over time.
- 30-Degree Lever Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt — a notably short arc that reduces the effort and wrist motion needed per actuation cycle, supporting accessibility and easing use under high-traffic conditions. The lever springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim, simplifying trim removal and reinstallation.
- Through-Bolted Interchangeable Trim: Trim, knobs, and levers are through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations to ensure proper alignment. The W lever can therefore be transferred to a rose-mounted configuration within the 8200 Series without replacing the lever itself, protecting the hardware investment across a renovation or re-specification.
- ADA Lever Form and Handing Requirement: The W lever form complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act; consult local authorities to confirm applicability in your jurisdiction. Note that while the lock body is field-reversible, this trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR at time of order. Available in six architectural finishes: 626 Satin Chrome, 630 Satin Stainless, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome.

Key Product Features
- ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational and Security Grade 1: Certified to and exceeding the highest ANSI/BHMA grade for mortise locksets with standard trims. Note that LFIC and SFIC cylinder options, where selected, do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements — a factor to weigh when Security Grade 1 certification is a project specification requirement.
- 16 Million Cycle Durability (UL Verified): The Sargent 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — sixteen times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 minimum — verified under UL Verification ID V584148. For high-traffic storeroom or closet applications, this margin above the standard directly extends expected service life before mechanical wear affects performance.
- 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Plated Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — supported by heavy-duty wrought steel hub construction and a high-carbon steel spring cartridge for superior strength throughout the operating cycle.
- UL / cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listing and UL 10C Positive Pressure: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser-class doors; the armored front is stamped with the letter F and the UL symbol to confirm the listing at installation inspection. The lockset also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test requirements.
- Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered in four cylinder/keyway configurations: LC (Less Cylinder, for owner-supplied cylinders); LA Keyway (standard 6-pin brass cylinder, #41 size, 1-1/8", masterkey and grand masterkey capable, construction keying available); 60 (LFIC Less Core); and 70 (SFIC Less Core). LFIC and SFIC core options do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1 requirements.
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the 8200 Series lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (replacement of lockbody). The lock body is field-reversible — re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — reducing installation time when door swing assignments change during a project.
