Sargent 8204 WTP Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
Specifying storeroom and closet hardware means locking out unauthorized entry while keeping egress unconditional — and coordinating escutcheon trim geometry across an entire hardware schedule. The Sargent 8200 Series 8204 WTP meets both demands. Built on the 8200 Series mortise platform, the 8204 Storeroom / Closet function (ANSI F07) allows key-only entry from the outside while the inside lever always retracts the latchbolt freely, with no credential required. Trim code WTP pairs the WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) with the P lever, giving specifiers a formal, escutcheon-mounted lever profile suited to institutional and commercial hardware schedules. Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational and Security Grade 1 with standard trims, the 8204 WTP delivers a combination of verified durability, defined function, and finish selection that supports both new construction and renovation specifications.
8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Only Outside Entry, Unconditional Inside Egress
The 8204 is a single-cylinder storeroom / closet function: the outside trim is locked at all times and only a key can retract the latchbolt from the corridor side, while the inside lever always retracts the latchbolt without a key or credential. The 8204 has no deadbolt, no thumbturn, no occupancy indicator, and no electrification — it is a strictly mechanical, key-outside-only function.
- Key-Outside Entry Only: The outside trim is locked at all times; only a key retracts the latchbolt from the outside. Because no push-button, thumbturn, or interior release can alter the outside locked condition, the storeroom or closet remains secured regardless of what occurs on the inside — a straightforward, schedule-friendly specification for asset-control doors.
- Unconditional Inside Egress: The inside lever always retracts the latchbolt, with no key or tool required. This uninterrupted egress path is integral to the ANSI F07 definition and ensures occupants are never trapped, making the function appropriate for occupied rooms that must remain locked from the corridor.
- Auxiliary Deadlatch — Stainless Steel, Non-Handed: A stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch travels alongside the primary latchbolt. When the door is closed, the deadlatch is depressed by the strike, preventing the latchbolt from being retracted by shimming. Being non-handed, the deadlatch functions correctly on any door swing without adjustment.
- Anti-Friction Stainless Steel Latchbolt on a Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece latchbolt is stainless steel with a 3/4" (19mm) throw and an anti-friction design that reduces the force required to pull a door closed against the strike. The lockbody itself is Sargent's multi-function platform — the same case that supports nine different ANSI functions — which means replacement or function changes in the field do not require a new door preparation.
WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) with P Lever — Coordinated Escutcheon Trim for Institutional Hardware Schedules
Trim code WTP mounts the P lever on a WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted), presenting a through-bolted escutcheon assembly that integrates cleanly into formal hardware schedules. Because the this trim is handed, door swing must be specified at time of order — the lock body's field reversibility does not extend to the escutcheon itself.
- 30-Degree Lever Rotation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. This reduced arc minimizes wrist and grip effort at the inside lever, and the lever springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim, simplifying trim installation and keeping the exterior profile clean.
- Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Mounting: To ensure proper alignment, the trim is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations across the 8200 Series. Through-bolting provides a mechanically secure connection between the lever and the lockbody spindle, and the interchangeability means the P lever can be moved to a rose mounting if a hardware schedule revision requires it.
- Lever Design and ADA Consideration: The P lever provides a return-to-door geometry at the lever's terminal end. The 8200 Series with standard trims complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act; consult local authorities to confirm applicability to your specific project conditions.
- Trim Handing — Order Carefully: this trim is handed. Specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when placing your order. Available finishes for this listing are: 626 (US26D Satin Chrome), 630 (US32D Satin Stainless), 613E (US10BE Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal), 605 (US3 Polished Brass), 612 (US10 Satin Bronze), and 625 (US26 Polished Chrome) — a range that supports both contemporary and traditional architectural palettes.

Key Product Features
- 16 Million Cycle Verified Durability: The Sargent 8200 Series completed a UL cycle test at 16 million cycles — exceeding the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 cycle requirement by 16 times (Verification ID: V584148). This performance record is directly relevant to high-traffic storeroom and closet doors in institutional settings.
- ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational and Security Grade 1: With standard trims, the 8204 WTP is certified to and exceeds ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1. Note that selecting the LFIC (option 60) or SFIC (option 70) cylinder configurations does not meet Security Grade 1 requirements per the catalog.
- 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — not the sintered iron used in the 7800 line — paired with a high-carbon steel spring cartridge for superior strength across the lock's service life.
- UL / cUL 3-Hour Fire Rating and UL 10C Positive Pressure: The 8204 is UL and cUL Listed for A-label single (4×10) and double (8×10) three-hour fire doors and all lesser-class doors, to both US and Canadian safety standards. It also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test requirements — a code requirement on many stairwell and corridor applications.
- Cylinder and Keyway Options for This Listing: This listing is offered in four cylinder configurations: LC (Less Cylinder) for owner-furnished cores; LA Keyway standard brass cylinder, size #41 (1-1/8"), master-keyable and available with construction keying; 60 (LFIC Less Core); and 70 (SFIC Less Core). Both LFIC and SFIC configurations do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1 requirements.
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the 8200 Series with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of the lockbody). The lock body is field reversible — it can be re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — reducing installation time and the risk of ordering errors when door swing is confirmed late in a project.

Ordering & Installation Information
The 8204 WTP requires door preparation per ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057. The backset is 2-3/4" (70mm) only — no field adjustment is available, so confirm rough framing and door edge distance before ordering. A minimum 4-1/2" (114mm) stile width is required to accept the mortise case; doors below that dimension are not compatible. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44mm), though the 8200 Series is offered for doors from 1-3/8" to 6" thick — consult the factory for non-standard thickness applications. The lock body is field reversible without opening the case; however, this trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR at time of order. Select from six finishes: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, or 625. Cylinder options are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core), or 70 (SFIC less core). The broader 8200 Series also offers MicroShield® antimicrobial finish coating, electro-mechanical configurations with ElectroLynx® connectors, status indicators, push/pull trim, and vandalism-deterrent secure fasteners as separately specified options. Lead time: factory order, 3–4 weeks.
