Sargent 8204 WTJ Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
The Sargent 8204 WTJ brings together the proven engineering of the Sargent 8200 Series mortise platform with a WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) and J lever trim combination sized for corridors and storage rooms that see continuous daily use. Built to the 8204 Storeroom/Closet function (ANSI F07), this lockset keeps the outside trim locked at all times — entry by key only — while preserving unrestricted egress from inside at all times, the operational profile demanded by storerooms, closets, and secured corridor doors in institutional and commercial facilities. Backed by ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 certification and a cycle-tested lockbody that far exceeds industry standards, the 8204 WTJ is a factory-order product available in six architectural finishes with a 3–4 week lead time.
8204 Storeroom/Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Entry, Free Egress, Always Secured Outside
The ANSI F07 function of the 8204 is purpose-built for spaces that must stay locked to the public while allowing occupants to exit freely at any time. The outside trim is locked at all times and yields only to a key; the inside trim always retracts the latchbolt, with no cylinder or thumbturn required on the interior — because the 8204 has no deadbolt and no thumbturn.
- Key-Only Outside Entry: A key inserted in the outside cylinder retracts the latchbolt, and the outside trim remains locked at all times regardless of latchbolt position. This means the door cannot be left unsecured by accident — the outside is never operable without a credential.
- Unrestricted Inside Egress: The inside trim always retracts the latchbolt freely, satisfying life-safety egress requirements without any additional hardware or credential. Occupants are never trapped by a locked outside cylinder.
- Auxiliary Deadlatch — Stainless Steel, Non-Handed: The stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch rides alongside the primary latchbolt and deadlocks it when the door closes fully against the strike. Because it is non-handed, it functions correctly on any door swing without adjustment or substitution.
- Anti-Friction Stainless Steel Latchbolt: The one-piece latchbolt is stainless steel with a 3/4" (19mm) throw and an anti-friction feature that eases door closing under load — important in high-traffic corridors where doors are pulled or pushed briskly throughout the day. The Multi-Function 8200/7800 lockbody that carries it is certified and tested to support all nine functions the platform offers.
WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) with J Lever: A Trim Pairing Built for Demanding Corridors
The WTJ trim pairs the WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) with the J lever, a combination chosen where a substantial lever feel and clean escutcheon profile are required to hold up aesthetically in high-traffic institutional corridors. The lever springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim, which simplifies trim installation and keeps the escutcheon profile uncluttered.
- 30-Degree Lever Rotation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. In a busy corridor this means doors open with a short, deliberate motion — reducing the effort and the arc of movement that fatigues hardware over millions of cycles.
- Lever Springs Inside the Case: Because the lever return springs are housed inside the lock case rather than the trim, the WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) installs cleanly and trim can be replaced or refinished without disturbing the spring mechanism — a practical advantage during renovation or finish changes.
- Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Trim: Trim, levers, and escutcheons are through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations to ensure proper alignment. This means the J lever used here can be consistently reproduced across a master specification calling for mixed trim styles on the same lockbody platform.
- ADA Lever Operation and Finishes: The J lever complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act — consult local authorities for project-specific requirements. Six architectural finishes are available: 626 Satin Chrome (US26D), 630 Satin Stainless (US32D), 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal (US10BE), 605 Polished Brass (US3), 612 Satin Bronze (US10), and 625 Polished Chrome (US26) — providing finish continuity across corridor openings.

Key Product Features
- 16 Million Cycle Tested — 16× the ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 Requirement: The Sargent 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles (Verification ID: V584148), exceeding the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 cycle requirement by 16 times. That margin directly translates to sustained performance in the high-repetition environments this storeroom function is specified for.
- ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: Certified with standard trims. Note that the LFIC less core (option 60) and SFIC less core (option 70) cylinder options available on this listing do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements — specify LC (less cylinder) or LA keyway where Security Grade 1 must be maintained end-to-end.
- 12-Gauge Heavy Duty Wrought Steel Case, Zinc Dichromate Plated: The lock case is 12-gauge wrought steel at 7/64" (3mm) thickness, zinc dichromate plated for corrosion resistance. Cold forged steel hubs and a high carbon steel spring cartridge provide the internal strength and cycle life the 8200 platform is rated for.
- UL/cUL Listed — 3-Hour Fire Door (A Label) and Positive Pressure: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser class doors. Meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test of Door Assemblies. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm listing at installation inspection.
- Cylinder and Keyway Options for This Listing: Four options are offered: LC (less cylinder), LA keyway (standard, masterkey and grand master key capable with construction keying available), 60 (LFIC less core), and 70 (SFIC less core). The standard cylinder is brass, size #41 (1-1/8"). LFIC and SFIC options do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1. LFIC, SFIC, and interchangeable core options beyond those listed are not available on this configuration.
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty / Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of lockbody). The lock body is field reversible and can be re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — note that the this trim is handed and handing must be specified separately at order (LH, RH, LHR, or RHR).
