Sargent 8204 WTE Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
The Sargent 8204 WTE is a commercial-grade mortise lockset from the Sargent 8200 Series, built around the 8204 Storeroom or Closet function (ANSI F07). Mounted on a WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) with an E lever, the escutcheon plate wraps the lock area with a solid, door-reinforcing bearing surface — keeping trim aligned and the cylinder presentation clean on high-traffic storeroom and closet openings. The 8204 function is intentionally single-credential: entry is by key only from the outside, while the inside lever always retracts the latchbolt freely, supporting unimpeded egress at every use. There is no deadbolt, no thumbturn, no occupancy indicator, and no electrification — this is a focused mechanical storeroom lockset. Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational and Security Grade 1 with standard trims, the 8200 Series has completed 16 million cycles in UL testing, setting the benchmark for mortise lock durability.
8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Entry, Always-Free Egress
Designed for storerooms, closets, and secured service areas where access must be controlled from the outside at all times, the ANSI F07 function keeps the outside trim locked continuously — no passage mode, no toggle. A single key turn retracts the latch for entry, while the inside lever remains unconditionally free so occupants can exit without a credential at any moment.
- Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside trim is locked at all times — only a valid key retracts the latchbolt from the corridor side. Because there is no outside thumbturn and no push-button holdback, the door cannot be left unsecured accidentally, which is why this function is the standard specification for supply rooms, IT closets, and utility spaces.
- Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside lever always retracts the latchbolt regardless of the outside locked condition. This unconditional egress path is not a convenience feature — it is a life-safety requirement on most occupied spaces, and the 8204 delivers it mechanically with no power or credential required.
- Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: A stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch accompanies the latchbolt. When the door closes, the deadlatch plunger contacts the strike and prevents the latchbolt from being slipped or pushed back without rotating the inside lever — a meaningful deterrent against casual forced entry on a storeroom door.
- Anti-Friction Latchbolt on a Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt has a 3/4" (19mm) throw and an anti-friction design that reduces the force needed to pull a door shut against a strike. The lockbody itself is Sargent's multi-function design — the same case supports nine ANSI functions, so facilities with multiple lockset types benefit from a common door prep and interchangeable hardware across the building.
WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) with E Lever — A Solid Mounting Platform for the Storeroom Opening
The WTE trim pairs a WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) with an E lever, presenting a clean escutcheon plate that covers and reinforces the lock cutout area of the door face. Lever springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim, simplifying trim removal and reinstallation without disturbing the spring mechanism — a practical advantage when re-keying or refinishing in the field.
- WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) — Protective Mounting Surface: The WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) provides a rigid bearing surface that spans the mortise pocket area, keeping the trim square to the door face and the cylinder presentation stable under repeated use. Because the escutcheon is a dedicated plate format rather than a rose, it covers a larger portion of the lock area — a practical advantage on hollow-metal and solid-core wood doors in institutional settings.
- 30-Degree Lever Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. That shallow arc is significant for users carrying supplies or equipment in both hands — minimal wrist torque yields a full latch retraction, and the same low-effort geometry benefits users with limited grip strength. The lever design complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act; consult local authorities for jurisdiction-specific requirements.
- Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Trim: Trim is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations, ensuring proper alignment across the door thickness. This means a facility specifying both rose and escutcheon trims in the same keyway system can share levers across trim formats — reducing spare-parts inventory without sacrificing alignment integrity.
- Handed Trim — Order LH, RH, LHR, or RHR: The this trim is handed and must be specified at time of order as LH, RH, LHR, or RHR. Note that the lock body itself is field-reversible without opening the case, so handing the trim correctly at order entry is the critical step — the body can be adjusted on site, but the trim cannot be flipped.

Key Product Features
- 16 Million Cycle Durability — Verified: The Sargent 8200 Series completed a UL cycle test at 16 million cycles (Verification ID: V584148), exceeding the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 cycle requirement by 16 times. For a storeroom door that is opened dozens of times per shift, that margin translates directly to years of maintenance-free operation.
- ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: Certified with standard trims. Note: LFIC (option 60) and SFIC (option 70) cylinder configurations do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements — specify options LA or LC if Security Grade 1 must be maintained through the cylinder.
- 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — not the sintered iron used in the 7800 line — paired with a high-carbon steel spring cartridge for superior strength and cycle life.
- UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Rating and Positive Pressure Tested: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser class doors. Also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm the listing at rough inspection.
- Cylinder and Keyway Options for This Listing: Four configurations are available: LC (Less Cylinder) for owner-supplied cylinders; LA Keyway (standard brass, 6-pin, masterkey-ready); 60 — LFIC Less Core; and 70 — SFIC Less Core. The standard cylinder is a #41 (1-1/8") brass. LFIC and SFIC core options do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1. LFIC, SFIC, and fixed-core interchangeable-core options not listed here are not available on this configuration.
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: Backed by a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of lockbody). The lock body is field-reversible — re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — reducing installation labor when door swing direction is confirmed on site rather than at the shop.
