Sargent 8204 WTB Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
The Sargent 8204 WTB belongs to the celebrated Sargent 8200 Series of mortise locksets — a product line that has defined the industry benchmark for commercial-grade mortise hardware for more than a century. This configuration pairs the 8204 Storeroom or Closet function (ANSI F07) with the WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) and B lever trim, delivering controlled single-cylinder access where outside entry is always key-controlled and inside egress is always free. The WT escutcheon's plate format covers the full mortise prep on the door face, presenting a clean, professional sight line in an architectural hardware schedule and protecting the door preparation beneath it. Specified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1, the 8204 WTB is a go-to solution for storerooms, supply closets, and similar access-controlled spaces in institutional and commercial facilities.
8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Outside, Always-Free Inside
The ANSI F07 function is purpose-built for spaces that must remain locked against unauthorized entry at all times while guaranteeing unobstructed egress from inside. Outside trim is locked at all times and can only be operated by key; inside trim always retracts the latchbolt freely. The 8204 has no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no electrification — its security is delivered entirely through its single-cylinder mechanical locking action.
- Key-Only Outside Entry: Turning a key in the outside cylinder is the sole means of retracting the latchbolt from the corridor side. Because the outside trim is locked at all times — not just when the occupant chooses — the door cannot be opened from outside without a key, which is exactly the control storeroom and closet applications require.
- Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside trim always retracts the latchbolt without a key. This unconditional egress path is a fundamental life-safety requirement, ensuring that anyone inside a storeroom or closet can exit at any time regardless of the lock state outside.
- Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed. When the door closes, the deadlatch bears against the strike and deadlocks the latchbolt, preventing the latch from being pushed back by shimming or credit-carding — a critical security characteristic for an unattended storeroom door.
- Anti-Friction Latchbolt: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt carries a 3/4" (19 mm) throw and an anti-friction feature that reduces the force required to latch the door. Quieter closing and reduced wear on the strike extend the service life of both components in high-cycle environments. The 8204 runs on the Multi-Function 8200 Lockbody, which embeds nine functions in a single case — allowing a storeroom function today with straightforward conversion to another function later without replacing the case.
WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) with B Lever: Plate Coverage and Profile on the Hardware Schedule
The WTB trim combines the WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) with the B lever. The escutcheon plate sits flush against the door face and spans the mortise preparation, giving the installed lockset a solid, intentional appearance rather than the smaller footprint of a rose-mount trim. Paired with the clean lines of the B lever, this combination reads clearly and consistently in a hardware schedule alongside other 8200 Series selections.
- Escutcheon Plate Coverage: The WT escutcheon's plate format covers the mortise pocket cut into the door face. This is a practical advantage where door face appearance matters: the full plate conceals the mortise prep, presenting a uniform finished surface rather than leaving the edge of the case cutout visible around a smaller rose.
- 30-Degree Lever Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to retract the latchbolt. That shallow arc means the B lever reaches its full mechanical travel with a short, controlled movement — a genuine ergonomic benefit during repetitive use and a factor in meeting lever-handle accessibility guidance. The lever complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act; consult local authorities to confirm compliance with the requirements of your jurisdiction.
- Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Trim: Trim, knobs, and levers are through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations. Lever springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim, which simplifies trim removal and reinstallation during servicing without disturbing the spring mechanism.
- Handing and Finishes: This trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR at time of order. Six architectural finishes are offered: 626 Satin Chrome, 630 Satin Stainless, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome.

Key Product Features
- ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: The 8204 WTB with standard trims is certified to and exceeds both operational and security grade requirements of the most demanding commercial mortise lock standard. Note that LFIC and SFIC cylinder options do not meet the Security Grade 1 requirement.
- 16 Million Cycle Durability (Verification ID: V584148): The 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — sixteen times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 requirement. For a storeroom door in a high-traffic facility, that margin means the hardware is highly unlikely to be the weak point in the maintenance cycle.
- 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Plated Steel Case: The lock case is fabricated from 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel at 7/64" (3 mm) thickness, zinc dichromate plated for corrosion resistance. Cold forged steel hubs and a high-carbon steel spring cartridge back up the case, providing the structural foundation for the cycle-life rating.
- UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listing and UL 10C Positive Pressure: The 8200 Series is UL and cUL Listed for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser-class doors. It also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test requirements. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and the UL symbol to confirm the listing at installation inspection.
- Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered in four cylinder configurations: LC (Less Cylinder) for owner-supplied cylinders; LA Keyway (standard six-pin brass, size #41 / 1-1/8", masterkey- and grand-masterkey-capable); 60 — LFIC Less Core; and 70 — SFIC Less Core. LFIC and SFIC cores are available on this trim but do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1 requirements — factor this into your specification if Security Grade 1 is required.
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty: Sargent backs the 8200 Series lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty, covering replacement of the lockbody. The 8204 is a purely mechanical function — it has no electrical, electromechanical, or monitoring components.

Ordering & Installation Information
The 8204 WTB installs to ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057 door prep. The 2-3/4" (70 mm) backset is the only backset available — there is no short-backset option — so verify the door stile width before ordering: a 4-1/2" (114 mm) minimum stile is required. The lock case is field-reversible without opening the case, making it straightforward to stock a single-hand lock body; however, this trim is handed and must be specified as LH, RH, LHR, or RHR at the time of order. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44 mm); the 8200 Series is available for doors from 1-3/8" to 6" — consult DoorwaysPlus for non-standard thickness configurations. Choose from six finishes: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, or 625. Cylinder options: LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core), or 70 (SFIC less core). The broader 8200 Series also offers optional MicroShield® antimicrobial coating, electro-mechanical configurations with ElectroLynx® connectors, status indicators, and secure fastener options — specify separately.
