Sargent 8204 WTA Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
Function (Sargent Catalog)
- Key outside retracts latchbolt
- Trim outside locked at all times
- Trim inside always retracts latchbolt
- Auxiliary deadlatch
- A Multi-Function 8200/7800 Lockbody
Specified where storeroom and closet doors demand reliable single-point control, the Sargent 8204 WTA brings together the proven Sargent 8200 Series mortise lockset platform with the WT Heavy Wrought Escutcheon (2-1/2" wide, surface mounted) and A lever trim combination. The 8204 Storeroom/Closet function (ANSI F07) keeps the outside trim locked at all times — entry is by key only — while interior egress remains unconditional, making it the correct function for supply rooms, file storage, closets and similar spaces where access must be controlled without trapping occupants. Behind that trim is a lockbody independently tested to 16 million cycles, a 12-gauge wrought steel case, and Grade 1 certifications under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000. For architects and specifiers coordinating an escutcheon-trim hardware schedule, the WTA trim code delivers a consistent institutional profile across a door series.
8204 Storeroom/Closet Function — ANSI F07: Controlled Entry, Free Egress
The ANSI F07 function defines a specific access hierarchy: the outside lever is locked at all times and yields only to a key, while the inside lever retracts the latchbolt freely and unconditionally. This makes the 8204 the correct choice wherever a facility manager needs to restrict who enters without restricting who exits — no occupancy indicator, no deadbolt, no thumbturn.
- Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside trim is locked at all times; a key is required to retract the latchbolt from the corridor side. Because there is no thumbturn and no inside release for the outside trim, access is controlled entirely at the keying level — master-keying and construction keying are both available on the LA standard keyway.
- Unconditional Inside Egress: The inside trim always retracts the latchbolt, with no unlocking step required. This is not a privacy or classroom function — there is no way to prevent egress from the secure side, which satisfies life-safety egress requirements for occupied spaces.
- Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed. When the door is properly closed against the strike, the deadlatch plunger is depressed, preventing the latchbolt from being retracted by shimming or credit-carding — a meaningful practical safeguard on a storeroom door that may not be under constant supervision.
- Anti-Friction Latch and Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt has a 3/4" (19mm) throw and an anti-friction feature that reduces the closing force required against a strike — important on doors in high-traffic corridors. The lockbody is a Sarge one lockbody covers nine functions, so a single case can be stocked instead of nine.
Key Product Features
- 16 Million Cycle Endurance: The Sargent 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — 16 times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 requirement (Verification ID: V584148). For a storeroom door in heavy institutional use, that cycle margin is a direct indicator of long-term service life before maintenance intervention.
- ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: Certified and exceeding both operational and security Grade 1 with standard trims. Note: LFIC and SFIC cylinder options (offered on this listing) do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements — specify the LA keyway or LC less-cylinder option when Security Grade 1 must be maintained.
- 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) /.109" thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — not the sintered iron used in the 7800 line — paired with a high carbon steel spring cartridge for superior strength across the lock's service life.
- UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Listing and Positive Pressure: Listed by UL and cUL to US and Canadian safety standards for A-label 4 x 10 single and 8 x 10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser class doors. Also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm listing at installation inspection.
- Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered in four cylinder configurations: LC – Less Cylinder; LA Keyway (6-pin brass, ANSI/BHMA A156.5 Grade 1, masterkeying and construction keying available); 60 – LFIC Less Core; and 70 – SFIC Less Core. The standard cylinder is brass, size #41 (1-1/8"). LFIC and SFIC cores do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1 requirements.
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lockbody: Sargent backs the 8200 lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of lockbody). The lock body is field reversible — it can be re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — reducing installation time and the risk of ordering errors on mixed-hand door schedules.

Ordering & Installation Information
The Sargent 8204 WTA is a factory order item with a lead time of 3–4 weeks. Door preparation follows ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057; confirm the door prep before specifying. The lockset requires a 2-3/4" (70mm) backset — no other backset is available — and a minimum 4-1/2" (114mm) stile width; doors that do not meet both dimensions cannot accept this lockbody. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44mm), though the 8200 Series is offered for door thicknesses ranging from 1-3/8" to 6" — consult the factory for non-standard thicknesses.
Special Note: The door handing information is needed upon order placement. If you are unsure of the handing of your door, please compare the picture above to your opening for clarification. The broader Sargent 8200 Series also offers MicroShield antimicrobial coating, status indicators, ElectroLynx electro-mechanical configurations, and vandalism-deterrent secure-fastener trim as separately specified options.
