Sargent 8204 TRY Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
Where a full escutcheon plate would dominate a door face, the Sargent 8200 Series 8204 with TRY trim takes a quieter approach. The TR Traditional Rose keeps hardware to a precise 2-3/16" circle, letting the Y lever read as a considered detail rather than a hardware assembly. Beneath that restraint sits a full commercial mortise lockset built to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational and Security Grade 1. The 8204 Storeroom or Closet function (ANSI F07) delivers straightforward, dependable access control: outside entry by key only, with free egress from the inside at all times. Sargent backs this with over a century of mortise lock manufacturing, and the 8200 Series cycle record speaks to its longevity in demanding institutional and commercial environments.
8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07 Key-Only Outside Entry
The 8204 is purpose-built for spaces that must remain secured from the corridor while allowing unimpeded exit from within. Outside trim is locked at all times — entry requires a key, every time. Inside trim always retracts the latchbolt freely, so occupants are never trapped. There is no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no occupancy indicator on this function.
- Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside lever is locked at all times; only a valid key retracts the latchbolt from the corridor side. This makes the 8204 the correct choice wherever a door must remain secured against unauthorised entry without any supplemental deadbolt.
- Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside trim retracts the latchbolt at all times without a key or credential. Occupants can exit without delay, satisfying life-safety egress requirements for storerooms and closets.
- Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed. When the door closes, the deadlatch deadlocks the latchbolt against push-back, preventing the latch from being slipped while the door is in the frame.
- Anti-Friction Latchbolt: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt provides a 3/4" (19mm) throw with an anti-friction feature that reduces door-closing force. The lockbody is a Multi-Function 8200 unit, meaning the same case supports nine distinct ANSI functions — simplifying inventory for specifiers managing multiple openings.
TR Traditional Rose (2-3/16" dia, Dual Radii Edge) with Y Lever
The TRY trim pairs the clean geometry of the TR Traditional Rose with the refined profile of the Y lever. At 2-3/16" in diameter with a dual radii edge, the TR rose presents a compact, unobtrusive footprint against the door face — a deliberate contrast to a full escutcheon plate — while the Y lever contributes a quietly architectural presence that reads well across a range of interior design vocabularies.
- Compact Rose Footprint: The TR Traditional Rose measures 2-3/16" in diameter with a dual radii edge profile. By covering only the immediate lock area, it preserves sight lines and keeps the door face clean — particularly relevant in corridors or interiors where visual continuity matters.
- Low-Effort Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to retract the latchbolt fully. That shallow arc reduces the force needed to open the door, which supports accessibility goals — the 8204 TRY complies with the American Disability Act; consult local authorities regarding specific project requirements.
- Lever Springs Inside the Case: The lever return springs are contained inside the lock case rather than mounted on the trim. This protects the springs from tampering and simplifies installation, since the trim goes on without separately managing spring components.
- Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Trim: Rose and escutcheon trim are through-bolted and fully interchangeable to ensure proper alignment. Available in six finishes: 626 Satin Chrome, 630 Satin Stainless, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome.

Key Product Features
- ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Grade 1: Certified to Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 with standard trims — the highest ANSI commercial mortise lock grade, covering both functional performance and resistance to forced entry.
- 16 Million Cycle Endurance: The 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles (Verification ID: V584148), exceeding the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 cycle requirement by 16 times. That margin translates directly to reduced maintenance intervals on high-traffic openings.
- 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated at 7/64" (3mm) thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel, supported by a high-carbon steel spring cartridge for superior strength across the product's service life.
- UL / cUL 3-Hour Fire Listed and UL 10C Positive Pressure: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser class doors. Also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test of Door Assemblies. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm listing.
- Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered in LC (Less Cylinder), LA Keyway, 60 (LFIC Less Core), and 70 (SFIC Less Core). Note: LFIC and SFIC cores do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1 requirements. The standard cylinder is brass, size #41 (1-1/8"). The LA keyway supports masterkeying and grand masterkeying; construction keying is also available.
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent's 10-year limited mechanical warranty covers the lockbody. The lock body is field reversible — re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — reducing installation time and jobsite inventory requirements.

Ordering & Installation Information
Door preparation follows ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057. The 8204 uses a 2-3/4" (70mm) backset only — no other backset is offered, so confirm rough prep before ordering. A 4-1/2" (114mm) minimum stile is required; doors narrower than this cannot accept the 8200 lockbody. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44mm), though the 8200 Series accommodates doors from 1-3/8" to 6" with appropriate options.
The lock body is field reversible without opening the case, but the Y lever trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR at time of order. Finishes available: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, and 625. Cylinder options on this listing: LC, LA, 60 (LFIC Less Core), and 70 (SFIC Less Core); LFIC and SFIC cores do not meet Security Grade 1. Factory lead time is 3–4 weeks. The broader 8200 Series also offers MicroShield antimicrobial coating, electro-mechanical configurations with ElectroLynx connectors, status indicators, push/pull ALP trim, and secure fastener options — all available as separately specified series options.
Special Note: The door handing information is needed upon order placement. If you are unsure of the handing of your door, please compare the picture above to your opening for clarification.
