Sargent 8204 TRS Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

The Sargent 8204 TRS brings the proven discipline of the Sargent 8200 Series mortise platform to storeroom and closet doors where key-controlled entry and unconditional free egress are the non-negotiable requirements. Classified as ANSI F07 Storeroom or Closet function, this configuration pairs the TR Traditional Rose — a 2-3/16" diameter carrier with a refined dual-radii edge profile — with the S lever to deliver a trim assembly that fits naturally into retrofit schedules where an existing round-rose aesthetic is already established. There is no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no electrification in this function: security is managed entirely through the cylinder outside, while the inside lever remains free at all times. Specified by architects and facility managers who need Grade 1 performance without changing a corridor's visual language, the 8204 TRS is a direct-fit answer to that brief.

Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Only Entry, Unrestricted Egress

The 8204 operates on a straightforward security premise: the outside trim is locked at all times, so entry always requires a key, while the inside lever retracts the latchbolt freely on every turn. That single rule makes ANSI F07 the correct function for stockrooms, IT closets, and storage areas where occupants must always be able to leave but access must remain controlled from the corridor side.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside lever is locked at all times — a key is the sole means of retracting the latchbolt from the corridor. Because there is no thumbturn and no inside control of the outside trim, there is no way to accidentally leave the door unlocked; the secured state is the default state.
  • Unconditional Free Egress: The inside lever always retracts the latchbolt, with no mode or condition that can trap an occupant. This is the defining characteristic of the storeroom function and the reason it is specified wherever life-safety codes demand unrestricted egress from a locked room.
  • Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed. When the door closes, the deadlatch bears against the strike and prevents the latchbolt from being pushed back without a key or the inside lever — guarding against loid attacks on the latch.
  • Anti-Friction Latchbolt and Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece, 3/4" (19 mm) throw stainless steel latchbolt incorporates an anti-friction feature that reduces door-closing resistance and wear over time. The lockbody itself is Sargent's multi-function design — the same case that supports nine functions — so facility managers who later need to respecify a different ANSI function on the same door can do so by changing trim and cylinder rather than replacing the mortise case.

Trim: TR Traditional Rose (2-3/16" dia, Dual Radii Edge) with S Lever

The TR rose measures 2-3/16" in diameter with a dual-radii edge that softens the transition between rose face and door surface — a small but visible detail that distinguishes it from a plain flat-edge rose. Paired with the S lever's form, the combination reads as traditional without being ornate, which is precisely why it integrates cleanly into retrofit projects without demanding a full hardware re-schedule across adjacent openings.

  • S Lever and TR Rose Geometry: The S lever's curved profile gives the trim a presence that a plain straight lever does not. The TR Traditional Rose, at 2-3/16" diameter with its dual-radii edge, provides a proportionate base that suits standard commercial stile widths without visually overwhelming the door face.
  • 30-Degree Lever Rotation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. That shallow arc reduces the effort and range of motion needed for each operation — a meaningful benefit on high-traffic storage doors and a contributor to the lock's compliance posture. The lever design complies with the American Disability Act; consult local authorities regarding specific code requirements in your jurisdiction.
  • Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Trim: Trim, including this rose and lever, is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations in the 8200 Series. That design ensures proper alignment and means that a future switch between rose and escutcheon trim does not require a new lock case or new door prep.
  • Lever Springs Inside the Case: The lever return springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim assembly itself. This simplifies trim installation and replacement in the field — the rose and lever can be removed and reinstalled without disturbing or re-tensioning the spring mechanism.

Function (Sargent Catalog)

  • Key outside retracts latchbolt
  • Trim outside locked at all times
  • Trim inside always retracts latchbolt
  • Auxiliary deadlatch
  • A Multi-Function 8200/7800 Lockbody

Key Product Features

  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: The 8204 TRS with standard trims is certified to and exceeds both Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000. Note: LFIC and SFIC cylinder options do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements — specify a conventional cylinder where Security Grade 1 is mandatory.
  • 16 Million Cycle Durability: The 8200 Series completed a UL "above and beyond" cycle test at 16 million cycles — sixteen times the cycles required by ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1. That margin is verification of long-term mechanical reliability in high-use institutional and commercial environments (Verification ID: V584148).
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Lock Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3 mm) wall thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — not the sintered iron used in the 7800 line — supporting the high hub loads that heavy lever trim generates over decades of use.
  • UL/cUL Listed — 3-Hour Fire Door and Positive Pressure: The lockset carries UL and cUL listings to US and Canadian safety standards for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser classifications. It also meets ANSI/UL 10C positive pressure fire test requirements. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm the listing on the installed hardware.
  • Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is available in four cylinder configurations: LC (Less Cylinder, customer-supplied); LA Keyway (Sargent standard conventional cylinder, masterkey- and grand-masterkey-capable, two nickel silver keys included); 60 (LFIC Less Core — large format interchangeable core housing, core ordered separately); and 70 (SFIC Less Core — small format interchangeable core housing, core ordered separately). LFIC and SFIC options do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1. All conventional cylinders are brass, size #41 (1-1/8").
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the 8200 Series lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty. The lock body is field reversible — it can be re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case, reducing installation time and eliminating the need to stock separate-handed lock cases for mixed door swings on a project.

Ordering & Installation Information

The 8204 TRS requires door prep per ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057 and a fixed 2-3/4" (70 mm) backset — no backset adjustment is available, so confirm rough framing and existing mortise pocket dimensions before ordering on a retrofit. A 4-1/2" (114 mm) minimum stile is required; doors at or near that minimum should be verified against the template before the order is placed. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44 mm); the 8200 Series is available for doors from 1-3/8" to 6" thick, so contact us if your application falls outside the standard.

The lock body is field reversible without opening the case; however, the S lever trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when ordering, as the trim cannot be reversed in the field. Available finishes are 626 Satin Chrome, 630 Satin Stainless, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome. Cylinder options are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core), and 70 (SFIC less core). The broader Sargent 8200 Series also offers optional MicroShield antimicrobial finish coating, status indicators, ElectroLynx electro-mechanical functions, and security trim configurations — consult DoorwaysPlus for those separately specified options. Lead time: factory order, 3–4 weeks.
