Sargent 8204 TRG Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

The Sargent 8204 TRG is a commercial-grade mortise lockset from the Sargent 8200 Series, configured to the storeroom or closet function (ANSI F07). Dressed in the TR Traditional Rose with its clean 2-3/16" diameter and dual-radii edge, paired with the G lever, this assembly brings a quietly enduring design language to high-traffic institutional and commercial openings. The 8204 function governs entry by key alone: the outside trim is locked at all times, admitting only a keyholder, while the inside trim remains unconditionally free for egress. There is no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no electrification — a deliberate, low-maintenance configuration purpose-built for storerooms, utility closets, and secured service areas where continuous inside egress is non-negotiable. Specified by architects and facility managers who demand parts availability and a long service record, the 8200 Series has earned its place as an institutional benchmark.

Storeroom or Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Entry, Unconditional Egress

The 8204 ANSI F07 function is built around a single operational principle: only a key opens the door from outside, while the inside lever is always free. No mode-switching, no thumbturn, no occupancy indicator. That simplicity eliminates misuse errors — a locked storeroom stays locked regardless of how the inside lever is operated.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside trim is locked at all times and can only be released by key — there is no provision to leave it unlocked or to turn it from the outside without a key. This makes the 8204 appropriate wherever access must be consistently controlled and cannot be left to occupant discretion.
  • Unconditional Inside Egress: The inside trim always retracts the latchbolt freely, with no key, code, or mode required. Because egress cannot be blocked by lock state, this satisfies life-safety egress requirements for occupied storerooms and service areas without a separate exit device.
  • Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed, meaning it installs correctly on any door swing and works independently of handing. It prevents the latchbolt from being slipped or pushed back when the door is closed, adding a passive layer of latching security with no moving parts to set.
  • Anti-Friction Stainless Steel Latchbolt: The one-piece latchbolt provides a 3/4" (19mm) throw and is designed with an anti-friction feature that reduces the force required to latch the door. Combined with only 30 degrees of lever rotation required to retract it, the result is a door that closes and opens with noticeably less effort — a practical advantage on high-use service openings.

TR Traditional Rose (2-3/16" dia, Dual Radii Edge) with G Lever

The TR Traditional Rose measures 2-3/16" in diameter with a dual-radii edge profile — a subtle detail that softens the transition from rose face to door surface and reads cleanly against both flat and lightly textured door faces. Paired with the G lever, the combination offers a restrained, institution-ready aesthetic suited to corridors, utility areas, and service spaces where trim longevity matters as much as appearance.

  • 30-Degree Lever Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. That reduced arc demands less wrist force and a shorter stroke, which is meaningful on doors operated dozens of times a day — and it contributes to the lock's compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act; consult local authorities to confirm applicability for your specific installation.
  • Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Mounting: Trim — whether rose or escutcheon — is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between the two formats. That means the G lever assembly used here can be moved between a TR rose and an escutcheon carrier without replacing the lever itself, protecting the hardware investment when a renovation changes the trim specification.
  • Lever Springs Inside the Case: The lever return springs are contained inside the lock case rather than housed in the trim. This keeps the rose assembly simpler and means that routine trim replacement or refinishing does not require managing loose spring components — a direct serviceability advantage for maintenance staff in the field.
  • Six Architectural Finishes: The TRG trim is available in 626 Satin Chrome (US26D), 630 Satin Stainless (US32D), 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal (US10BE), 605 Polished Brass (US3), 612 Satin Bronze (US10), and 625 Polished Chrome (US26) — a range that covers both contemporary and traditional interiors without requiring a special-order finish.

Key Product Features

  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: The 8204 with standard trims is certified to and exceeds both operational and security Grade 1 — the highest rating in the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 mortise lock standard. Note that LFIC and SFIC cylinder configurations do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements; specify accordingly if security grade certification is a contract requirement.
  • 16 Million Cycle Verified Durability: The Sargent 8200 Series completed a UL cycle test at 16 million cycles — sixteen times the cycles required by the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 standard (Verification ID: V584148). For a storeroom or closet lock on a busy service corridor, that margin translates directly into a longer service interval before mechanical wear becomes a maintenance issue.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — not the sintered iron used in the 7800 line — supported by a high-carbon steel spring cartridge for long-term strength and cycle life.
  • UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listed and UL 10C Positive Pressure Rated: The 8200 Series is UL and cUL Listed for A label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser class doors, to both US and Canadian safety standards. It also meets ANSI/UL 10C positive pressure fire test requirements. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and the UL symbol to confirm listing in the field.
  • Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered in LC (Less Cylinder), LA Keyway (standard 6-pin brass, ANSI/BHMA A156.5 Grade 1, masterkeying and construction keying available), 60 (LFIC Less Core), and 70 (SFIC Less Core). The cylinder is a #41 (1-1/8") brass standard. Two nickel-silver keys are included with keyed cylinders; a control or emergency key must be ordered separately when required.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: The 8200 Series carries a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of the lockbody). The lock body is field reversible and can be re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — simplifying both initial installation and any future door-swing changes.

Ordering & Installation Information

The 8204 TRG requires door prep to ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057 and is standard for 1-3/4" (44mm) doors; the 8200 Series is offered across a door-thickness range of 1-3/8" to 6" — consult factory for non-standard thicknesses. A 2-3/4" (70mm) backset is the only backset available on this trim; verify rough-in before ordering. A 4-1/2" (114mm) minimum stile is required for standard mechanical functions — openings narrower than this cannot accept the lock case. The lock body is field reversible without opening the case; however, the G lever trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when ordering, as trim handing cannot be reversed in the field. Select from six finishes: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, or 625. Cylinder options are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core), or 70 (SFIC less core). This is a factory order item with a 3–4 week lead time. The broader 8200 Series also offers MicroShield antimicrobial coatings, electro-mechanical configurations, status indicators, and push/pull ALP trim — available as separately specified options on the Series.
