Sargent 8204 TEY Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

Specified where controlled entry and free egress define the program, the Sargent 8204 TEY is a Sargent 8200 Series mortise lockset in the Storeroom or Closet function (ANSI F07). Outside trim is locked at all times, admitting only keyholders while inside trim turns freely for unrestricted egress — the operating logic required for storerooms, storage areas, and similar controlled-occupancy spaces. This listing pairs that function with the TE Traditional Escutcheon (2" x 7-7/8", dual radii edge, Coastal Series) and Y lever, a trim combination that brings measured architectural character to a hardware schedule without disrupting the clean geometry that coordinated escutcheon layouts demand. Rated ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational and Security Grade 1 with standard trims, the 8204 TEY delivers the cycle life, fire ratings, and finish range that institutional and commercial specifiers require.

8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Entry, Always-Free Egress

The 8204 (ANSI F07) is a single-cylinder storeroom function: a key outside retracts the latchbolt, outside trim remains locked at all times, and inside trim always retracts the latchbolt freely. The 8204 has no deadbolt, no thumbturn, no occupancy indicator, and no electrification — it is a purely mechanical, key-outside-only lockset.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside lever retracts the latchbolt only when a valid key is used — the lever itself does not turn without the cylinder. Because outside trim is locked at all times and there is no override thumbturn, control of the space remains entirely with the keyholder, making this function well-suited to storerooms and storage spaces where unescorted entry must be restricted.
  • Unrestricted Inside Egress: Inside trim always retracts the latchbolt regardless of the outside condition, satisfying life-safety egress requirements without any secondary action. No credential, tool, or knowledge is required to exit — occupants simply operate the inside lever to leave.
  • Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed, meaning the same component serves left- and right-hand doors without substitution. It deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is fully closed, preventing the latchbolt from being shimmed or slipped back — a practical benefit in any controlled-access application.
  • Anti-Friction One-Piece Latchbolt: The latchbolt is a one-piece stainless steel unit with a 3/4" (19mm) throw and an anti-friction feature that eases door closing under moderate closer pressure. The Multi-Function 8200/7800 lockbody that carries these components supports nine functions in a single case, meaning field function changes are possible without replacing the entire lock body.

TE Traditional Escutcheon (2" x 7-7/8", dual radii edge, Coastal Series) with Y Lever — Refined Detailing for Coordinated Hardware Schedules

The TEY trim combines the TE Traditional Escutcheon (2" x 7-7/8", dual radii edge, Coastal Series) carrier with the Y lever, a pairing that suits escutcheon-based hardware schedules where consistent plate geometry and a distinctively shaped lever are specified across multiple openings. Lever springs are contained inside the lock case — not in the trim — so the escutcheon assembly installs cleanly without managing external spring components.

  • Y Lever Profile: The Y lever brings a refined, individual character to the escutcheon trim that distinguishes it within the 8200 Series lever family. Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt, reducing the operational effort needed at the opening — a meaningful consideration for high-traffic or accessibility-sensitive applications.
  • TE Traditional Escutcheon (2" x 7-7/8", dual radii edge, Coastal Series): The TE escutcheon serves as the carrier plate for the trim assembly. Lever and trim are through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations, which simplifies specification coordination when a project mixes rose and escutcheon openings on the same lockset line.
  • Lever Springs Inside the Case: Because lever springs are contained inside the lock case rather than housed in the trim, the escutcheon assembly presents a cleaner face and installation is less prone to spring-alignment issues at the door. This also means trim can be swapped or re-ordered without concern about spring components in the escutcheon itself.
  • ADA Lever Operation and Finish Selection: The Y lever complies with the American Disability Act; consult local authorities to confirm applicability to your jurisdiction and occupancy. This listing is offered in five architectural finishes: 626 Satin Chrome (US26D), 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal (US10BE), 605 Polished Brass (US3), 612 Satin Bronze (US10), and 625 Polished Chrome (US26).

Key Product Features

  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: Certified to and exceeding the top commercial grade with standard trims. Note that LFIC and SFIC cylinder options (offered on this listing) do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements; specify the LC or LA keyway cylinder options where Security Grade 1 must be maintained end-to-end.
  • 16 Million Cycle Verified Durability: The Sargent 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — 16 times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 standard requirement (Verification ID: V584148). That margin translates directly to reduced service interruption in high-use institutional and commercial corridors.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate-Plated Wrought Steel Case: The lock case is heavy-duty 12-gauge wrought steel with a zinc dichromate plating at 7/64" (3mm) /.109" thickness. Cold forged steel hubs and a high carbon steel spring cartridge complete the internal drivetrain, delivering the structural consistency the Grade 1 cycle rating demands.
  • UL / cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listed and UL 10C Positive Pressure Certified: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A-label single (4×10) and double (8×10) 3-hour fire doors and lesser classifications. Also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test requirements. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm listing at the door.
  • Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is available in four cylinder configurations: LC (Less Cylinder) for owner-supplied cylinders; LA Keyway (standard brass #41 / 1-1/8" cylinder, masterkeying and construction keying available); 60 — LFIC Less Core; and 70 — SFIC Less Core. The #41 (1-1/8") brass cylinder is standard for this trim. LFIC and SFIC cores do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1 requirements.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: The 8200 Series carries a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (limited to replacement of the lockbody). The lock body itself is field reversible — re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — reducing installation labor when door swing is confirmed late in a project.

Ordering & Installation Information

Door preparation follows ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057. The 8204 TEY requires a 2-3/4" (70mm) backset — no other backset is available — and a minimum 4-1/2" (114mm) stile width; verify both against the door schedule before specifying. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44mm), though the 8200 Series is offered for doors from 1-3/8" (35mm) to 6" (152mm) when so specified. The lock body is field reversible and can be re-handed without opening the case; however, this trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when ordering, and confirm trim handing against the final door swing. Specify one of six finishes: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, or 625. Cylinder options are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core), or 70 (SFIC less core). This item is a factory order with a 3–4 week lead time. The broader Sargent 8200 Series also offers optional MicroShield® antimicrobial finish coating, electro-mechanical configurations with ElectroLynx® connectors, status indicator trim, push/pull ALP trim, and secure fastener options — all available on the Series and separately specified.
