Sargent 8204 TES Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
The Sargent 8204 TES brings together the proven engineering of the Sargent 8200 Series mortise lockset platform with the refined aesthetic of the TE Traditional Escutcheon (2" x 7-7/8", dual radii edge, Coastal Series) and S lever. Designed for storeroom and closet doors, this ANSI F07 function delivers single-cylinder control: the outside trim remains locked at all times, entry is by key only, and egress from the inside is always free — no credential, no delay. The 8204 carries no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no occupancy indicator; its security comes entirely from the key-controlled latchbolt and stainless auxiliary deadlatch. Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational and Security Grade 1 with standard trims, the 8204 TES is the specification choice for high-traffic storage and service corridors where appearance retention and mechanical reliability are equally non-negotiable.
Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07 Single-Cylinder Key Control
The 8204 is purpose-built for spaces that must stay secured against unauthorised entry while guaranteeing unrestricted egress at all times. Outside, the lever is locked at all times and yields only to a key. Inside, the lever always retracts the latchbolt freely — no credential, no override step required. The 8204 has no deadbolt and no thumbturn.
- Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside trim is locked at all times; only a valid key retracts the latchbolt. Because there is no thumbturn and no inside button that can be left in a locked state, the door cannot be accidentally secured against a keyholder — the key is the sole control point.
- Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside trim always retracts the latchbolt, unconditionally. Occupants can exit at any time without a key or credential, a requirement that underpins life-safety compliance on storeroom and closet doors.
- Stainless Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed. When the door closes fully and the deadlatch is depressed by the strike, it prevents the latchbolt from being slipped or pushed back — adding a mechanical layer of resistance to latch manipulation without requiring any additional hardware.
- Anti-Friction Latch & Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt with 3/4" (19mm) throw incorporates an anti-friction feature that reduces the force needed to pull the door shut against the strike. The lockbody itself is Sargent's patented multi-function design — the same case that supports nine ANSI functions — so replacement or upgrade does not require a new door preparation.
TE Traditional Escutcheon (2" x 7-7/8", dual radii edge, Coastal Series) with S Lever — Form and Finish for Demanding Corridors
The TE Traditional Escutcheon (2" x 7-7/8", dual radii edge, Coastal Series) pairs a classically proportioned escutcheon plate with the curves of the S lever, producing a trim profile suited to institutional and commercial corridors where appearance must hold up alongside daily abuse. Five architectural finishes are offered, from satin chrome to oil rubbed bronze, allowing coordination with a wide range of interior specifications.
- S Lever Design: The S lever's fluid, form distinguishes it from utilitarian straight or return levers, offering an aesthetic presence appropriate for lobbies, service corridors and storage areas in higher-finish institutional projects without sacrificing everyday operability.
- 30-Degree Lever Rotation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. In a busy corridor where hands may be full, that shallow arc translates directly into faster, lower-effort operation on every passage cycle.
- Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Trim: To ensure proper alignment, the trim is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon mounting configurations. Lever springs are contained inside the lock case, simplifying installation and keeping the trim assembly clean during fitting.
- ADA Lever Operation & Handing: The lever-style trim complies with the American Disability Act; consult local authorities to confirm applicability in your jurisdiction. Note that this trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR or RHR when ordering. Six finishes are available: 626 Satin Chrome, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome.

Key Product Features
- ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational & Security Grade 1: Certified to and exceeding the highest ANSI/BHMA grade for mortise locksets with standard trims, confirming both long-term operational performance and resistance to forced entry as defined by the standard. Note: LFIC and SFIC cylinder options do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements.
- 16 Million Cycle Durability (UL Verified): The 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — sixteen times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 cycle requirement (Verification ID: V584148). On a high-traffic storeroom door used dozens of times daily, that margin translates directly into years of additional service life.
- 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Plated Steel Case: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, with a 7/64" (3mm) wall thickness. Cold forged steel hubs and a high carbon steel spring cartridge are matched to that case for consistent, high-cycle reliability.
- UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Rating & Positive Pressure (UL 10C): Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser class doors. Also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure fire testing — a requirement on many current building codes for corridor and stairwell assemblies.
- Cylinder & Keyway Options: This listing is offered in four cylinder configurations: LC (Less Cylinder), LA Keyway (standard brass #41, 1-1/8" cylinder, masterkey and grand masterkey capable), 60 (LFIC Less Core), and 70 (SFIC Less Core). The LA keyway ships with two nickel silver keys. LFIC and SFIC cores do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1.
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty: Sargent backs the 8200 Series lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of the lockbody), reflecting the quality of materials and construction throughout the lock case and trim assembly.

Ordering & Installation Information
The 8204 TES requires door preparation per ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057. The backset is 2-3/4" (70mm) only — no alternative backset is available — and a minimum 4-1/2" (114mm) stile is required; verify both before specifying on narrow-stile doors. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44mm); the 8200 Series is offered for door thicknesses from 1-3/8" to 6" where required. The lock body is field-reversible and can be re-handed without opening the lock case or removing parts, but this trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR or RHR at time of order. Choose from six finishes: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612 or 625. Cylinder options are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core) or 70 (SFIC less core). This is a factory order item with a 3–4 week lead time; confirm cylinder, handing and finish before placing the order. The broader 8200 Series also offers MicroShield antimicrobial coating, ElectroLynx electro-mechanical configurations, status indicators, and push/pull ALP trim as separately specified options.
Special Note: The door handing information is needed upon order placement. If you are unsure of the handing of your door, please compare the picture above to your opening for clarification.
