Sargent 8204 TER Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

Where architectural presence meets uncompromising access control, the Sargent 8200 Series 8204 TER Mortise Lockset delivers a full-escutcheon statement that commands attention at every opening. The TE Traditional Escutcheon (2" x 7-7/8", dual radii edge, Coastal Series) paired with the R lever brings a refined, contemporary silhouette suited to institutional, commercial, and high-design environments where hardware is expected to perform as well as it reads. Configured to the 8204 Storeroom or Closet function (ANSI F07), this lockset provides key-controlled entry from the outside while keeping the inside trim always free for immediate egress — exactly the logic storerooms, supply closets, and secure utility spaces demand. Built on Sargent's century-proven 8200 platform, the 8204 TER brings Grade 1 durability and fire-rated security behind a trim profile worthy of a specifier's signature.

8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Controlled Entry, Unrestricted Egress

The ANSI F07 function is purpose-built for spaces that must remain locked to casual entry yet never impede egress from within. Outside, a key is always required to retract the latchbolt — the outside trim does not turn unless unlocked by key. Inside, the lever retracts the latchbolt freely at all times. The 8204 carries no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no electrification; its security is mechanical and deliberate.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside trim remains locked at all times — a key is required to retract the latchbolt from the corridor or exterior side. Because the outside lever never turns in the locked state, there is no mechanical invitation to force it, and unauthorized entry through lever manipulation is prevented by design.
  • Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside trim retracts the latchbolt freely without a key or credential at any time. This unconditional egress capability is fundamental to life-safety compliance in occupied storerooms and utility spaces where occupants must never be trapped.
  • Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed. Its function is to deadlock the latchbolt against push-in attack when the door is fully closed — preventing the latchbolt from being depressed without a key. Because it is non-handed, it operates correctly regardless of door swing direction.
  • Anti-Friction Stainless Steel Latchbolt + Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece, 3/4" (19mm) throw anti-friction stainless steel latchbolt eases door closing under light pull force, reducing wear at the strike over millions of cycles. The lockbody is Sargent's Multi-Function 8200 platform — a single case that supports nine ANSI functions — so if operational requirements change, the lockbody can be reconfigured without replacing the door prep.

TE Traditional Escutcheon (2" x 7-7/8", dual radii edge, Coastal Series) with R Lever — Full-Plate Architectural Presence

The TE Traditional Escutcheon (2" x 7-7/8", dual radii edge, Coastal Series) presents the lock mechanism behind a full escutcheon plate, framing the R lever in a clean, architecturally considered surround that elevates the entire opening. The Coastal Series designation signals a trim lineage designed for expressive, detail-forward interiors where the hardware reads as an intentional design element rather than an afterthought.

  • Full Escutcheon Carrier: The TE escutcheon covers the lock area with a traditional full-plate format, providing a cohesive architectural backdrop for the R lever. The escutcheon and lever are through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations, ensuring proper alignment and structural integrity at the trim interface.
  • 30-Degree Lever Rotation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. This reduced arc lowers the mechanical effort required for operation — a meaningful benefit for occupants who actuate the door dozens of times daily and for facilities evaluating operational ergonomics.
  • Lever Springs Inside the Case: The lever return springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim assembly. This approach simplifies trim installation and reduces the chance of spring misalignment during field service, keeping maintenance straightforward over the lockset's service life.
  • ADA Lever Design and Finish Selection: The R lever design complies with the American Disability Act — consult local authorities to confirm applicability to your specific jurisdiction and installation. The 8204 TER is offered in five architectural finishes: 626 Satin Chrome, 630 Satin Stainless, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome. Because this trim is handed, specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when ordering.

Function (Sargent Catalog)

Key Product Features

  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: The 8204 TER with standard cylinder meets both Operational and Security Grade 1 requirements. Note: LFIC (option 60) and SFIC (option 70) cylinders do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements — specify accordingly when security grade certification is a project requirement.
  • 16 Million Cycle Verified Durability: The 8200 Series completed a UL cycle test at 16 million cycles — sixteen times the cycles required by the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 standard (Verification ID: V584148). Cold forged steel hubs and a high carbon steel spring cartridge underpin this cycle life.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Steel Case: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, with a wall thickness of 7/64" (3mm) (.109"). The 1/8" (.125") cold-rolled steel inside front holds the lock securely in the door preparation.
  • UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listed + UL 10C Positive Pressure: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A label 4 x 10 single and 8 x 10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser class doors. The lockset also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure fire test requirements. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm listing in the field.
  • Keyway and Cylinder Options: This listing is offered in four cylinder configurations: LC (Less Cylinder) for owner-supplied cores; LA Keyway standard brass cylinder (#41, 1-1/8"), master-keyable and available with construction keying; 60 (LFIC Less Core); and 70 (SFIC Less Core). LFIC and SFIC options do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1. Two nickel silver keys are included with keyed cylinders.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty: Sargent backs the 8200 Series lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of the lockbody), reflecting confidence in the platform's long-term reliability in commercial and institutional service.

Ordering & Installation Information

The 8204 TER requires door preparation per ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057. Standard backset is 2-3/4" (70mm) only — no field adjustment is available, so verify the door preparation before ordering. A 4-1/2" (114mm) minimum stile is required; narrower stiles cannot accommodate the lockbody. The lockset is standard for 1-3/4" (44mm) thick doors; consult Sargent for thinner or thicker door applications. The lock body is field reversible and can be re-handed without opening the lock case — however, this trim is handed and must be specified as LH, RH, LHR, or RHR at time of order; trim handing cannot be changed in the field. six finishes are available: 626, 613E, 605, 612, and 625. Cylinder options are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core), and 70 (SFIC less core). The 8200 Series also offers MicroShield antimicrobial coating, status indicators, electro-mechanical ElectroLynx configurations, and push/pull ALP trim as separately specified series-level options — contact DoorwaysPlus to discuss. Lead time: 3–4 weeks factory order.
