Sargent 8204 TEG Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

The Sargent 8204 TEG brings together the trusted engineering of the Sargent 8200 Series mortise lockset platform with the refined aesthetic of the TE Traditional Escutcheon (2" x 7-7/8", dual radii edge, Coastal Series) and the G lever. Configured to the 8204 Storeroom or Closet function (ANSI F07), this single-cylinder mortise lock controls outside entry by key alone while preserving unconditional inside egress at all times — the defining characteristic of a storeroom function. The TE escutcheon plate wraps the lock area in a substantial, door-reinforcing mounting surface that anchors the trim assembly firmly to the face of the door. Specified across commercial, institutional, and coastal-influenced architectural environments, the 8204 TEG delivers ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 performance in a trim profile suited to both contemporary and transitional design palettes.

8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Entry, Always-Free Egress

The 8204 operates on a straightforward, secure principle: the outside trim is locked at all times and responds only to a key, while the inside trim always retracts the latchbolt freely. There is no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no occupancy indicator — entry is key-only, egress is unconditional. That disciplined simplicity makes the 8204 the correct choice wherever a room must remain secured against unauthorized entry yet freely exitable at all times.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: Turning a key in the outside cylinder retracts the latchbolt; the outside trim is locked at all times and cannot retract the latch without a valid key. Because this is a single-cylinder function, there is no inside keyway — the inside lever always operates freely regardless of the outside cylinder status.
  • Unconditional Inside Egress: The inside trim always retracts the latchbolt without a key, credential, or any special action. This is the core behavioral requirement of the storeroom function and is built directly into the lockbody — it resists defeat from the outside.
  • Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed, meaning it is equally durable in either door orientation. It engages automatically when the door closes, preventing the latchbolt from being retracted by shimming or slipping — a practical safeguard on any secured storeroom or closet door.
  • Multi-Function 8200 Lockbody: The 8204 is built on Sargent's multi-function lockbody — the first in the industry to embody nine functions in a single lock case. For facilities managing multiple door types, this means the lockbody platform is consistent across the building even where functions differ, simplifying stock, service, and replacement.

TE Traditional Escutcheon (2" x 7-7/8", dual radii edge, Coastal Series) with G Lever — Trim Detail

The TE Traditional Escutcheon belongs to Sargent's Coastal Series trim family, presenting a full escutcheon plate that spans the lock area and provides a solid, continuous mounting surface against the door face. Paired with the understated G lever, the combination suits commercial and institutional interiors where a traditional silhouette and a protective plate profile are both specified requirements.

  • Escutcheon Plate as Protective Mounting Surface: The TE escutcheon covers the lock area with a full traditional plate, anchoring the trim assembly across a broad surface. This plate-based mounting distributes the connection between trim and door face — a practical advantage over rose-only trim on doors subject to repeated, heavy use.
  • 30-Degree Lever Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation are required to fully retract the latchbolt. That shallow arc reduces the effort needed per operation — relevant in high-traffic storeroom and service environments where the inside lever is actuated dozens of times daily.
  • Lever Springs Inside the Case: The lever return springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim assembly. This simplifies trim installation and keeps the spring mechanism protected, since the case is already secured within the door.
  • ADA Lever Design and Finishes: The G lever complies with the American Disabilities Act; consult local authorities to confirm applicability in your jurisdiction. Five architectural finishes are available for this trim: 626 Satin Chrome, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome — supporting specification across a wide range of interior design programs.

Key Product Features

  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: The 8204 TEG is certified to and exceeds ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, achieving both Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 with standard trims. Note that LFIC and SFIC cylinder options do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements; specify the LA keyway or LC less-cylinder option where Security Grade 1 is required.
  • 16 Million Cycle Durability: The Sargent 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — sixteen times the cycles required by the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 standard (Verification ID: V584148). For a storeroom lock operated repeatedly throughout each shift, that margin translates directly to service life.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate-Plated Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — paired with a high carbon steel spring cartridge for strength and cycle life throughout the life of the lock.
  • UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listing and UL 10C Positive Pressure: The 8200 Series is UL and cUL Listed for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser classifications, listed to US and Canadian safety standards. It also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test requirements — the armored front is stamped with the letter F and the UL symbol to confirm listing status on the installed unit.
  • Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered in four cylinder configurations: LC – Less Cylinder (specify your own cylinder separately); LA Keyway (Sargent standard keyway, masterkeying and grand masterkeying available, two nickel silver keys included); 60 – LFIC Less Core; and 70 – SFIC Less Core. The LA keyway option supports construction keying. LFIC (60) and SFIC (70) less-core options do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1 requirements. The cylinder is brass, size #41 (1-1/8") standard.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the 8200 Series lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of the lockbody). The lock body itself is field reversible — it can be re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case, reducing installation time when door swing changes during a project.

Ordering & Installation Information

The 8204 TEG installs on doors prepared to ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057 and requires a 2-3/4" (70mm) backset — no other backset is available on this lockset, so verify rough door prep before ordering. A minimum 4-1/2" (114mm) stile width is required; narrower stiles cannot accommodate the 8200 lockbody. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44mm), though the 8200 Series is offered for door thicknesses from 1-3/8" to 6" — contact us if your door falls outside the standard dimension.

The lock body is field reversible and can be re-handed on site without opening the case. This trim is handed and must be specified at time of order: select LH, RH, LHR, or RHR. Available finishes are 626, 613E, 605, 612, and 625. Cylinder options are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core), and 70 (SFIC less core). This is a factory order item with a 3–4 week lead time. For high-abuse, healthcare, or specialized access-control environments, the broader Sargent 8200 Series offers optional configurations including MicroShield antimicrobial finish coating, electro-mechanical functions with ElectroLynx connectors, status indicators, and vandalism-deterrent trim with secure fasteners — contact DoorwaysPlus to specify.
