Sargent 8204 OW Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
The Sargent 8200 Series 8204 OW Trim Mortise Lockset delivers storeroom and closet security in a trim profile engineered for doors where a smaller hardware footprint is the right architectural choice. Carrying the ANSI F07 Storeroom/Closet function, this lockset admits keyholders from the outside while keeping the outside trim locked at all times — no thumbturn, no deadbolt, no electrification. The O Rose at 2-3/4" diameter presents a compact bearing surface that leaves more door face visible, paired with the broad-grip W lever for confident operation. Built on Sargent's patented 8200 Series lockbody — certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational and Security Grade 1 — the 8204 OW delivers over a century of Sargent mortise engineering in a clean, low-profile package suited to institutional and commercial storeroom applications.
8204 Storeroom/Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Outside Entry, Always-Free Inside Egress
The ANSI F07 function is purpose-built for storerooms, supply closets, and secured utility spaces. Outside entry requires a key at all times — the outside trim does not turn without one. Inside egress is always free: the inside lever retracts the latchbolt without any credential. This one-way credential logic is the defining characteristic of the 8204.
- Key-Only Outside Entry: A key is required to retract the latchbolt from the outside, and the outside trim remains locked at all times regardless of the interior condition. The 8204 has no thumbturn and no inside unlocking mechanism — once a keyholder locks up and leaves, the outside trim cannot be turned without a key.
- Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside lever always retracts the latchbolt freely without a key or any other credential. This unconditional inside release is a fixed characteristic of ANSI F07 — not a mode that can be toggled — ensuring occupants are never trapped.
- Auxiliary Deadlatch — Stainless Steel, Non-Handed: The stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch automatically deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes, preventing the latch from being slipped or depressed without lever operation. Because it is non-handed, it functions correctly on doors of either swing without modification.
- Anti-Friction Latchbolt and Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt features a 3/4" (19mm) throw with an anti-friction tip, reducing the force required to close the door against the strike. The lockbody itself is Sargent's Multi-Function 8200 lockbody — the same case supports nine distinct functions, meaning the hardware infrastructure is consistent across a facility even when different functions are specified door-to-door.
O Rose (2-3/4" dia) and W Lever: Compact Footprint, Wide Grip
The OW trim pairs the O Rose at 2-3/4" diameter with the W lever. The circular rose is among the more compact carriers in the 8200 Series, covering only the area immediately around the through-bolt holes and leaving the majority of the door face open — a practical advantage on narrow stiles and a clean look on flush panel doors. The W lever's broad profile provides a confident grip surface for everyday operation.
- Compact O Rose Footprint: At 2-3/4" (70mm) diameter, the O Rose occupies a minimal footprint on the door face. Where visual clutter or stile width is a concern, this smaller rose keeps the hardware presence proportional without compromising the structural through-bolt connection to the lockbody.
- Low-Effort Lever Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. On a door used many times daily by staff carrying supplies or equipment, that reduced arc translates directly to easier one-handed operation throughout the service life of the lock.
- Non-Handed Trim and Internal Lever Springs: The W lever trim is non-handed, so no handing selection is needed at the time of order — the same trim ships for left-hand and right-hand doors alike. Lever return springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim, simplifying trim removal and reinstallation when the door is later repaired or refinished.
- Through-Bolted Interchangeable Trim and ADA Lever Operation: Trim, including this rose and lever, is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations, ensuring proper alignment and a secure mechanical connection. The W lever complies with the American Disability Act; consult local authorities to confirm applicability under your jurisdiction. Six finish options are available — see finish selector above.

Key Product Features
- ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational and Security Grade 1: The 8204 OW is certified to and exceeds both Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 with standard trims — the highest dual-grade rating under A156.13. Note: LFIC (60) and SFIC (70) cylinder options do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements; specify accordingly where Grade 1 security certification is mandatory.
- 16 Million Cycle Verified Durability: The 8200 Series lockbody has completed Sargent's UL Cycle above-and-beyond test at 16 million cycles — sixteen times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 cycle requirement (Verification ID: V584148). For high-traffic storeroom doors cycled dozens of times daily, that margin translates to a service life measured in decades.
- 12-Gauge Heavy-Duty Wrought Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated at 7/64" (3mm) thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — paired with a high carbon steel spring cartridge — providing the structural backbone that sustains Grade 1 performance through millions of cycles.
- UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Listed and UL 10C Positive Pressure Rated: The 8204 is UL and cUL Listed for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser class assemblies. It also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test requirements — a distinction that matters when the authority having jurisdiction requires positive-pressure certification for life-safety doors.
- Cylinder and Keyway Options for This Listing: Four options are offered: LC (Less Cylinder) for owner-supplied cylinders; LA Keyway (standard Sargent LA keyway, 6-pin, brass, size #41 / 1-1/8", masterkey and construction keying available); 60 — LFIC Less Core; and 70 — SFIC Less Core. LFIC and SFIC are interchangeable-core platforms that do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1. Standard cylinder is brass, size #41 (1-1/8").
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lockbody: Sargent covers the lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of lockbody). The lock body is field reversible — re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — so the same unit can be redirected to an opposite-hand door in the field without special tools.

Ordering & Installation Information
The 8204 OW installs per ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057 and requires a 2-3/4" (70mm) backset — no other backset is available on this lockbody, so confirm rough-door preparation before ordering. A 4-1/2" (114mm) minimum stile is required; narrower stiles will not accommodate the case. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44mm); the 8200 Series is offered for doors from 1-3/8" to 6" but non-standard thicknesses must be specified separately. The W lever trim is non-handed — no handing selection is required. The lock body is field reversible without opening the case, but trim handing and lock body handing are independent specifications; the non-handed W trim accommodates both swings automatically. Six finishes are available: 626 Satin Chrome, 630 Satin Stainless, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome. The broader 8200 Series also offers MicroShield antimicrobial coating, status indicator options, ElectroLynx electro-mechanical configurations, and security trim variants — consult DoorwaysPlus for those separately specified options. Lead time: 3–4 weeks factory order.
