Sargent 8204 OF Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
Retrofitting an existing storeroom or closet opening without re-cutting the door? The Sargent 8204 OF mortise lockset is designed with exactly that scenario in mind. Part of the industry-benchmark Sargent 8200 Series, this configuration pairs the 8204 Storeroom / Closet function (ANSI F07) with the O Rose (2-3/4" dia) trim carrier and the clean, contemporary F lever — a combination that coordinates readily with other O-rose trim already scheduled on a project. Outside entry requires a key at all times; the inside lever always retracts the latchbolt freely, meeting the fundamental life-safety requirement for occupied storerooms. There is no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no occupancy indicator — a deliberate, unambiguous storeroom solution built to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational and Security Grade 1.
8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Outside Entry, Always-Free Inside Egress
The 8204 function is purpose-built for storerooms and closets where the room must remain locked from the corridor side at all times yet never trap an occupant inside. Outside trim is locked continuously — only a key retracts the latchbolt from the corridor. Inside trim is always active, so anyone inside can exit without a key, a credential, or any secondary action.
- Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside trim is locked at all times; only a key retracts the latchbolt. Because there is no passage or push-button hold-open on this function, the door returns to the secured condition every time it closes — no manual re-locking step is required of staff.
- Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside trim always retracts the latchbolt, regardless of the outside locked state. This means an occupant can never be trapped — a critical life-safety distinction for occupied storerooms and closets that specifiers and AHJs routinely require.
- Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed. When the door closes fully, the deadlatch engages automatically and prevents the latchbolt from being retracted by shimming or carding — adding a layer of security without any additional hardware or keying.
- Anti-Friction Stainless Steel Latchbolt: The one-piece latchbolt is stainless steel with a 3/4" (19mm) throw and an anti-friction feature. The anti-friction design reduces the closing force needed to compress the latch against the strike, which matters on fire-rated assemblies where door closers must be set to meet both latch and fire-rating requirements simultaneously. The lockbody is a Multi-Function 8200/7800 body, meaning the same case supports nine ANSI functions — simplifying parts inventory for facilities that stock spare lockbodies.
O Rose (2-3/4" Dia) and F Lever: Clean Round Trim for Schedule-Matched Retrofit and New Work
The OF trim combines a 2-3/4" diameter O rose with the F lever — a modern, lever profile mounted on a compact round rose. The 2-3/4" rose diameter is a common footprint in institutional and commercial specifications, making the OF combination a practical choice when matching or replacing existing round-rose mortise trim without altering the door face.
- F Lever — Non-Handed Trim: The F lever trim is non-handed, so no handing selection is required at time of order. This simplifies procurement on projects with mixed door swings and eliminates the risk of receiving a mis-handed trim on a fast-turn replacement.
- 30-Degree Lever Rotation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. The shallow arc reduces the wrist motion an occupant must make, which is directly relevant to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act — the 8200 Series complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act; consult local authorities regarding specific project requirements.
- Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Trim: Trim, knobs, and levers are through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations. This means the F lever can be moved to an escutcheon carrier later if the opening's requirements change, protecting the hardware investment and keeping the same lever profile consistent across a building.
- Lever Springs Inside the Case: The lever return springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim itself. This simplifies trim removal and reinstallation during finish changes or maintenance — a practical advantage in facilities that periodically re-key or replace trim without pulling the entire lockbody.

Key Product Features
- ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: The 8204 OF with standard trims is certified to and exceeds ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, achieving both Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1. Note: the LFIC less-core (60) and SFIC less-core (70) cylinder options available on this listing do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements — specify LA keyway or LC less-cylinder if Security Grade 1 is required throughout.
- 16 Million Cycles — 16× the ANSI Grade 1 Requirement: The 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles (Verification ID: V584148), exceeding the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 cycle requirement by 16 times. For high-traffic storeroom doors that are opened and closed dozens of times daily, this margin translates directly to reduced lifecycle replacement cost.
- 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) /.109" thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — not the sintered iron used in the 7800 line — backed by heavy-duty wrought steel hubs and a high-carbon steel spring cartridge for superior strength and cycle life.
- UL / cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listing and UL 10C Positive Pressure: The lockset is UL and cUL Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser classifications. It also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test of Door Assemblies. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm listing at the door.
- Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered in four cylinder configurations: LC (Less Cylinder, buyer-supplied); LA Keyway (Sargent standard, masterkey- and grand-masterkey-capable, construction keying available); 60 (LFIC Less Core); and 70 (SFIC Less Core). All conventional cylinders are brass, size #41 (1-1/8") standard. LFIC and SFIC core options do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1.
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty: The lockbody carries a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (5-year limited MELR; 2-year limited electrical — electrical coverage not applicable to this mechanical function). Warranty is limited to replacement of the lockbody.
