Sargent 8204 OA Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

Thirty degrees. That is all the lever rotation the Sargent 8200 Series demands from a hand carrying a supply cart, a stack of files, or a cafeteria tray — and it is one of the quietly important reasons this platform has become a benchmark in institutional hardware. The Sargent 8204 OA Trim Mortise Lockset pairs that ergonomic lock body with a 2-3/4" diameter O Rose and the clean, radius-edged A lever to deliver the 8204 Storeroom or Closet function (ANSI F07): key-controlled entry from outside, free egress from inside at all times, and an auxiliary deadlatch that prevents latch manipulation. Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1, it is a factory-order item available in six architectural finishes with a lead time of 3–4 weeks.

8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Only Entry, Always-Free Egress

The ANSI F07 storeroom or closet function is built around a single access rule: the outside trim is locked at all times, entry requires a key, and the inside lever is always free to retract the latch without a credential. That combination makes the 8204 the correct mechanical function for storerooms, supply closets, IT equipment rooms, and any space where uncontrolled entry must be prevented but occupant egress must never be.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside lever is locked at all times — it will not retract the latchbolt without a valid key. Because there is no thumbturn, no deadbolt, and no push-button inside, the locked condition is continuous and cannot be accidentally overridden by an occupant.
  • Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside lever retracts the latchbolt in every condition, no credential required. This means occupant egress is never blocked by lock state — a critical life-safety characteristic for rooms that may be entered and secured behind the user.
  • Auxiliary Deadlatch — Stainless Steel and Non-Handed: A stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch travels alongside the primary latchbolt. When the door closes and the deadlatch depresses against the strike, it deadlocks the latchbolt against retraction by a shimming tool. Because it is non-handed, it performs correctly regardless of which way the lock body is oriented in the door.
  • Anti-Friction Stainless Steel Latchbolt on a Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece latch is stainless steel with a 3/4" (19mm) throw and an anti-friction feature that reduces the closing force needed to cam the latch past the strike lip — reducing both door slam and long-term wear. The lockbody itself is Sargent's multi-function 8200/7800 platform, which means the same case supports nine functions, simplifying field replacement if the function requirement ever changes.

O Rose (2-3/4" Dia.) and A Lever: Proportioned Trim for High-Traffic Institutional Doors

The OA trim partners a 2-3/4" diameter O Rose with the A lever — a radius-style lever whose proportions suit corridors and support spaces where handles endure repeated, forceful use throughout a shift. The trim is through-bolted to the lock body and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon mounting configurations, which simplifies retrofit and future trim changes without replacing the lock case.

  • 30-Degree Lever Rotation: Only 30 degrees of lever travel are required to fully retract the latchbolt. For occupants moving quickly or carrying loads, this low arc translates into less wrist torque and a more forgiving operation — an advantage that compounds over thousands of daily cycles in busy institutional environments.
  • Through-Bolted and Interchangeable: Trim, whether rose or escutcheon, is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between the two mounting styles. This means the A lever can be repositioned to escutcheon trim in the future without replacing the lock case, protecting the hardware investment when a space is repurposed.
  • Lever Springs Inside the Case: The lever return springs are housed inside the lock case rather than in the trim rose. This keeps the spring mechanism protected from the wear and contamination that rose-mounted springs can encounter on high-traffic doors, contributing to the lock body's verified 16-million-cycle durability.
  • Lever Handing and ADA Qualification: The A lever trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when ordering, as this cannot be reversed in the field. The lever design complies with the American Disability Act; consult local authorities to confirm applicability for your specific installation. Available in six finishes: 626 Satin Chrome, 630 Satin Stainless, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome.

Function (Sargent Catalog)

  • Key outside retracts latchbolt
  • Trim outside locked at all times
  • Trim inside always retracts latchbolt
  • Auxiliary deadlatch
  • A Multi-Function 8200/7800 Lockbody

Key Product Features

  • 16-Million-Cycle Verified Durability: The 8200 Series lock body completed a UL "above and beyond" cycle test at 16 million cycles — sixteen times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 requirement — with Verification ID V584148. For a storeroom door that may see dozens of entries per day, that margin is a direct indicator of service life.
  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: Certified to the highest tier of the ANSI mortise lock standard with standard trims. Note: if LFIC (option 60) or SFIC (option 70) cores are specified, those cylinder configurations do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements per ANSI/BHMA A156.13.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) thickness. The 8200 Series hubs — the torque-transfer points between the lever and the latch mechanism — are cold forged steel, paired with a high-carbon steel spring cartridge for superior strength across the lock's service life.
  • UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listed and UL 10C Positive Pressure Certified: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A-label 3-hour fire doors (4"×10" single and 8"×10" double), with the F stamp and UL symbol on the armored front confirming the listing. The lockset also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test requirements — a mandatory compliance point on many fire-rated door assemblies.
  • Cylinder and Keyway Options for This Listing: Order as LC (Less Cylinder) to supply your own cylinder, LA Keyway for the standard Sargent LA keyway with a brass #41 (1-1/8") cylinder, 60 (LFIC Less Core), or 70 (SFIC Less Core). LFIC and SFIC core options accept large- or small-format interchangeable cores respectively but, as noted, do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1. The LA keyway supports master keying and grand master keying; construction keying is also available.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty: Sargent backs the 8200 Series lock body with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of the lock body).nfidence in the platform's construction quality.

Ordering & Installation Information

The 8204 OA installs in a door prepared to ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057 with a fixed 2-3/4" (70mm) backset — no field adjustment is available, so confirm the door prep before ordering. A 4-1/2" (114mm) minimum stile width is required; narrower stiles cannot accommodate the lock case. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44mm), though the 8200 Series is offered for thicknesses from 1-3/8" to 6" — contact us if your door falls outside the standard.

The lock body is field-reversible without opening the case or removing parts, a genuine installation convenience. The A lever trim, however, is handed and must be specified as LH, RH, LHR, or RHR at time of order; handing cannot be corrected in the field. Select from six finishes: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, or 625. Cylinder options are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core), or 70 (SFIC less core).

This is a factory-order item with a lead time of 3–4 weeks. The broader Sargent 8200 Series also offers optional MicroShield antimicrobial coating, status indicators, ElectroLynx electro-mechanical configurations, push/pull ALP trim, and vandalism-deterrent secure-fastener trim — consult us to specify those options on a separate line item.
