Sargent 8204 LW1J Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
Specifying mortise hardware for a storeroom or secured closet demands precision at every line of the hardware schedule — function, trim code, finish, and handing all locked together before the first hole is cut. The Sargent 8200 Series 8204 LW1J delivers exactly that coordination. Built around the 8204 Storeroom or Closet function (ANSI F07), this mortise lockset pairs the clean, institutional profile of the LW1 escutcheon with the tactile, substantial grip of the J lever. Entry is by key only from outside; the inside trim always retracts the latch freely, keeping egress unrestricted. Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 with standard trims, and logged at 16 million cycles in UL testing, this is a specification-grade lockset built for facilities where accountability and durability are non-negotiable.
8204 Storeroom or Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Entry, Always-Free Egress
The ANSI F07 storeroom function is the correct choice wherever a door must remain continuously secured against unauthorized entry while guaranteeing unrestricted egress at all times. The outside trim is locked at all times — there is no pushbutton, no thumbturn, and no deadbolt. A key is the sole means of outside entry, and the inside lever always operates freely.
- Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside trim is locked at all times; only a key retracts the latchbolt from the outside. Because there is no hold-open button or thumbturn on this function, the secured condition cannot be inadvertently defeated — the door re-secures every time it closes.
- Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside trim retracts the latchbolt freely at all times, with no unlocking step required. This unconditional egress behavior satisfies life-safety requirements for occupied storerooms and secured closets without modification.
- Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed. When the door closes against the strike, the deadlatch is depressed by the strike lip and prevents the latchbolt from being retracted by shimming or carding — a critical security layer on a door that must stay locked until keyed.
- Anti-Friction Latchbolt and Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt provides a 3/4" (19mm) throw and an anti-friction tip that reduces door-closing resistance and hardware wear. The lockbody is a Sargent Multi-Function 8200/7800 design, meaning a single case can be configured to nine different ANSI functions — simplifying inventory for facilities managing multiple door types.
LW1 Escutcheon Trim with J Lever: Specification Fit and Secure Grip
The LW1J trim combines the LW1 escutcheon with the J lever — a pairing that suits institutional and commercial hardware schedules where a refined escutcheon profile and a confident, ergonomic lever handle are both called for. The lever springs are housed inside the lock case rather than in the trim, simplifying trim removal during maintenance without disturbing the spring mechanism.
- J Lever — Ergonomic Grip and Low-Effort Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. This reduced arc minimizes wrist strain on high-traffic doors and supports ease of use across a wide range of occupants.
- LW1 Escutcheon — Handed Trim, Precision Fit: The LW1 escutcheon is a handed trim — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when ordering. This is distinct from the lock body, which is field reversible; the escutcheon must be ordered for the correct hand to align the lever and cylinder properly on the door face.
- Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Mounting: Trim is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations, ensuring proper alignment and a secure, rattle-free installation that holds position under repeated use.
- ADA Lever Design and Finish Selection: The J lever complies with the American Disability Act — consult local authorities to confirm applicability to your specific project. Available in six architectural finishes: 626 Satin Chrome, 630 Satin Stainless, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome.

Key Product Features
- 16 Million Cycle Tested: The Sargent 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — exceeding the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 requirement by 16 times (Verification ID: V584148). For facilities with high door traffic, this cycle life translates directly to reduced maintenance intervals.
- ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: Certified to both operational and security Grade 1 with standard trims, this lockset meets the highest published benchmark for mortise lock performance. Note: selecting the LFIC (option 60) or SFIC (option 70) cylinder configuration does not meet the Security Grade 1 requirement.
- 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Lock Case: The case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, with a wall thickness of 7/64" (3mm). Cold forged steel hubs and a high-carbon steel spring cartridge complete the internal load-bearing assembly.
- UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listing and UL 10C Positive Pressure: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A-label single (4' x 10') and double (8' x 10') 3-hour fire doors and lesser classifications. Also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure fire test requirements. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm listing status on the door.
- Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered in four cylinder configurations: LC (Less Cylinder) for owner-supplied cylinders; LA Keyway standard brass cylinder (#41, 1-1/8"); 60 — LFIC Less Core; and 70 — SFIC Less Core. The LA keyway supports masterkeying, grand masterkeying, and construction keying. LFIC and SFIC cores are not available on this listing and must be sourced separately; note that LFIC and SFIC configurations do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1.
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the 8200 Series with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of lockbody). The lock body is field reversible — re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — reducing installation time and the risk of keying a job to the wrong hand.

Ordering & Installation Information
The 8204 LW1J requires door preparation per ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057. The backset is 2-3/4" (70mm) only — no other backset is available, so verify rough-frame and door-edge dimensions before specifying. A minimum 4-1/2" (114mm) stile is required; doors narrower than this stile width cannot accept this lock body. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44mm).
The lock body is field reversible without opening the case; however, this trim is handed and must be ordered as LH, RH, LHR, or RHR — confirm door swing before placing the order. Choose from six finishes: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, or 625. Cylinder options are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core), and 70 (SFIC less core). This item is a factory order with a 3–4 week lead time — plan accordingly in your submittal schedule.
The broader Sargent 8200 Series also offers optional configurations including MicroShield antimicrobial finish coating, electro-mechanical ElectroLynx functions, status indicators, push/pull ALP trim, and vandalism-deterrent secure fastener trim — available as separately specified 8200 Series options.
Special Note: The door handing information is needed upon order placement. If you are unsure of the handing of your door, please compare the picture above to your opening for clarification.
