Sargent 8204 LW1E Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
The Sargent 8204 LW1E brings together the proven performance of the Sargent 8200 Series mortise platform with a clean LW1 Escutcheon and E lever trim combination purpose-built for storeroom and closet openings. Operating to ANSI F07, this is a single-cylinder storeroom/closet function: the outside lever is locked at all times and admits entry by key only, while the inside lever always retracts the latchbolt freely for immediate egress — no key, no thumbturn, no credential required from the secure side. The LW1 escutcheon plate spans the mortise preparation in the door face, delivering a finished, institutional appearance while keeping the lock case cleanly covered. Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational and Security Grade 1 with standard trims, the 8204 LW1E is a straightforward, high-durability solution for storage rooms, supply closets, and similar controlled-access openings.
8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Entry, Free Inside Egress
The 8204 defines a single access rule: only a key opens the door from outside, while anyone inside can leave at any time. That clarity makes ANSI F07 the correct function for storerooms, supply rooms, and closets where staff need reliable, unimpeded egress but the space must stay locked against unauthorized entry whenever unattended.
- Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside trim is locked at all times — there is no thumbturn, no push-button, and no hold-open mode on this function. A key retracts the latchbolt from the outside, ensuring the opening remains secured against unauthorized entry whenever the space is unattended.
- Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside lever always retracts the latchbolt, regardless of the outside locked condition. Occupants are never trapped — a critical life-safety characteristic that makes the 8204 appropriate for any occupied storeroom or closet under applicable codes.
- Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed, and it deadlocks the latchbolt when the door closes against the strike. This prevents the latchbolt from being slipped or pushed back with a card or thin tool, maintaining the integrity of the locked condition between key-entry cycles.
- Anti-Friction Latch & Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt features an anti-friction design with a 3/4" (19mm) projection, reducing the force needed to latch the door — important in high-traffic or self-closing door applications. The lockbody itself is a Multi-Function 8200/7800 platform, meaning one lockbody covers nine functions across the series.
LW1 Escutcheon & E Lever Trim: Plate Coverage Meets Everyday Ease of Operation
The LW1 escutcheon runs a continuous plate across the lock face of the door, covering the mortise preparation and presenting a uniform, finished appearance on the outside of the opening. Paired with the E lever, this trim combination delivers a lever handle accessible to a wide range of users — an important consideration wherever operational ease is a specification requirement.
- Escutcheon Plate Coverage: The LW1 escutcheon provides a continuous surface over the mortise cutout in the door face, resulting in a clean, institutional finish. Because the plate spans the lock prep area, it also eliminates any exposed gap around the case — a detail specifiers and facility managers notice on high-visibility openings.
- 30-Degree Lever Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. That shallow arc means the inside lever responds with minimal effort and minimal wrist deviation, making the 8204 LW1E well-suited to openings where ease of operation matters — the lever complies with the American Disability Act; consult local authorities regarding specific project requirements.
- Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Trim: Trim, levers, and escutcheons are through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations across the 8200 platform, ensuring proper alignment and a secure mechanical connection. Lever springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim, simplifying trim removal and reinstallation during service.
- Finish Options: The LW1E trim is offered in six finishes: 626 Satin Chrome (US26D), 630 Satin Stainless (US32D), 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal (US10BE), 605 Polished Brass (US3), 612 Satin Bronze (US10), and 625 Polished Chrome (US26) — covering the most commonly specified architectural palettes from commercial to institutional environments.

Key Product Features
- 16 Million Cycle Verified Durability: The Sargent 8200 Series completed a UL "above and beyond" cycle test at 16 million cycles (Verification ID: V584148) — exceeding the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 cycle requirement by 16 times. For a storeroom lock that will see repeated daily use over decades, that margin is a direct measure of service life.
- ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational & Security Grade 1: Certified to the highest grade in the A156.13 standard with standard trims, the 8204 LW1E meets both operational performance and security classification requirements for commercial and institutional applications.
- 12-Gauge Zinc Dichromate Steel Case: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) (.109") thickness. The cold forged steel hubs — paired with a high carbon steel spring cartridge — are the specified hub material for the 8200 Series, providing superior strength and contributing to the verified cycle life.
- UL / cUL 3-Hour Fire Listed & Positive Pressure Rated: The 8204 lockbody is UL and cUL Listed for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser classifications, and meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test requirements. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm the listing at inspection.
- Cylinder & Keyway Options: This listing is offered with LC (Less Cylinder), LA Keyway (standard brass #41 / 1-1/8" cylinder, masterkeying and construction keying available), 60 — LFIC Less Core, and 70 — SFIC Less Core. Note: LFIC and SFIC core configurations do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1 requirements — specify LC or LA if Security Grade 1 is required by the project.
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty: Sargent backs the 8200 Series lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of lockbody). That coverage reflects the quality of components inside the case and provides a documented basis for long-term facility maintenance planning.

Ordering & Installation Information
The 8204 LW1E requires a door prepared to ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057 and accepts a 2-3/4" (70mm) backset only — no alternative backset is available, so verify rough prep before ordering. A 4-1/2" (114mm) minimum stile is required; narrower stiles cannot accommodate the mortise case. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44mm), though the 8200 Series is available across a range of door thicknesses — consult the factory for non-standard conditions.
The lock body is field-reversible and can be re-handed without opening the case or removing parts. This trim is handed and must be ordered as LH, RH, LHR, or RHR — specify handing at time of order. Select from six finishes: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, or 625. Cylinder options are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core), or 70 (SFIC less core); LFIC and SFIC do not meet Security Grade 1. The broader Sargent 8200 Series also offers MicroShield antimicrobial coating, status indicators, ElectroLynx electro-mechanical configurations, and security trim options — available as separately specified configurations. Factory lead time: 3–4 weeks.
Special Note: The door handing information is needed upon order placement. If you are unsure of the handing of your door, please compare the picture above to your opening for clarification.
