Sargent 8204 LW1A Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

Built for the institutional corridors and storage rooms where hardware earns its keep every day, the Sargent 8200 Series 8204 LW1A Trim Mortise Lockset pairs the proven 8200 Series lockbody with the LW1 Escutcheon and A lever to deliver controlled, single-point access wherever storeroom or closet security is required. The 8204 function (ANSI F07) operates on a simple, tamper-resistant principle: a key outside is the only means of retracting the latchbolt from the corridor side, while the inside lever always allows free egress — no codes to remember, no thumbturn to manipulate. The result is an ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational and Security Grade 1 lockset engineered to withstand the repetitive mechanical stress of high-traffic institutional environments without sacrificing appearance or reliability.

8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Entry with Unconditional Inside Egress

The 8204 (ANSI F07) function keeps the outside trim locked at all times — entry is granted only by key, never by manipulating the lever from the corridor. Inside, the lever always retracts the latchbolt freely, ensuring unobstructed egress. This is a single-cylinder, mechanical function only: the 8204 has no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no electrification.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside trim is locked at all times; only a valid key retracts the latchbolt from the exterior. Because there is no way to turn the outside lever without a key, unauthorized entry is prevented without any additional user action — the door is never inadvertently left unsecured from the corridor side.
  • Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside trim retracts the latchbolt at all times with no key required, satisfying life-safety egress requirements. Occupants can exit freely regardless of the locked status of the outside, making this function equally appropriate for storage rooms and service corridors where egress must never be impeded.
  • Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed. It automatically deadlocks the latchbolt once the door is closed, preventing the latchbolt from being pushed back by shimming or credit-card manipulation — a practical security layer that requires no additional operation by the user.
  • Anti-Friction One-Piece Latchbolt: The latchbolt is a one-piece stainless steel unit with a 3/4" (19mm) throw and an anti-friction feature that reduces the force needed to latch the door. This is especially meaningful in high-traffic corridors where doors close repeatedly under load; reduced latching resistance translates directly to less wear on both the latch and the strike over millions of cycles. The lockbody is a Multi-Function 8200 Se one lockbody covers nine functions, so a single case can be stocked instead of nine.

LW1 Escutcheon with A Lever: Institutional Durability, Refined Appearance

The LW1A trim combines the LW1 Escutcheon carrier with the A lever, a pairing chosen for environments that demand hardware capable of performing through constant use without looking worn. The escutcheon presents a clean, architectural profile, while the A lever's geometry supports effortless operation. Note that the LW1 escutcheon trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR at the time of order.

  • 30-Degree Lever Rotation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. In a busy storeroom or service corridor, this low-travel operation reduces the physical effort demanded of every user on every pass — an ergonomic advantage that also contributes to long-term mechanical consistency.
  • Through-Bolted, Fully Interchangeable Trim: To ensure proper alignment, the trim is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations across the 8200 Series. This means the A lever can be repositioned or the carrier swapped in the field without acquiring proprietary tooling, simplifying maintenance in large facilities with diverse trim specifications.
  • Lever Springs Inside the Case: The lever return springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim. This arrangement keeps the spring assembly enclosed, and it simplifies trim removal when servicing is needed.
  • ADA Lever Operation and Finish Selection: The A lever design complies with the American Disability Act; consult local authorities to confirm applicability in your jurisdiction. The LW1A trim is offered in six architectural finishes: 626 Satin Chrome (US26D), 630 Satin Stainless (US32D), 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal (US10BE), 605 Polished Brass (US3), 612 Satin Bronze (US10), and 625 Polished Chrome (US26) — providing coordination flexibility across a wide range of interior design standards.

Key Product Features

  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: The 8204 LW1A is certified to and exceeds ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 with standard trims. Note that selecting the LFIC or SFIC cylinder options (60 or 70) does not meet Security Grade 1 requirements — specifiers requiring Security Grade 1 should select the LC or LA keyway options.
  • 16 Million Cycle Verified Durability: The Sargent 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles (Verification ID: V584148), exceeding the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 cycle requirement by 16 times. For facility managers specifying hardware on doors that see hundreds of operations per day, this verified cycle life translates to a measurably lower long-term replacement cost.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Plated Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc-dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) /.109" thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — not the sintered iron used in the 7800 line — supported by a high-carbon steel spring cartridge for sustained strength over the lock's service life.
  • UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listing and Positive Pressure Compliance: The 8204 LW1A is UL and cUL Listed to U.S. and Canadian safety standards for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser class doors. The lockset also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test of Door Assembly requirements — look for the stamped F and UL symbol on the armored front as confirmation of listing.
  • Cylinder and Keyway Options for This Listing: Four options are available: LC (Less Cylinder) for owner-supplied cylinders; LA Keyway, the standard 6-pin brass cylinder at size #41 (1-1/8"), masterkeying and construction keying capable; 60 — LFIC Less Core; and 70 — SFIC Less Core. The LA keyway ships with two nickel silver keys. As noted above, LFIC (60) and SFIC (70) cores do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1 requirements.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the 8200 Series lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of lockbody). The lock body is field reversible — re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — so the same unit can serve a door swinging in either direction, reducing inventory requirements for large projects.

Ordering & Installation Information

The 8204 LW1A requires door prep per ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057 and is standard for 1-3/4" (44mm) thick doors (the 8200 Series is offered for door thicknesses from 1-3/8" to 6" — consult Sargent for non-standard door thicknesses). The lock requires a 2-3/4" (70mm) backset only — no alternative backset is available, so confirm rough prep before ordering. A minimum 4-1/2" (114mm) stile is required; narrower stiles will not accommodate the lockbody. The lock body is field reversible without opening the case, but this trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when placing your order. Six finishes are available: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, and 625. Cylinder options are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core), and 70 (SFIC less core). This is a factory order item with a 3–4 week lead time. The broader Sargent 8200 Series also offers optional MicroShield® antimicrobial coating, status indicators, ElectroLynx® electro-mechanical configurations, push/pull ALP trim, and vandalism-deterrent trim with secure fasteners — available on separately specified configurations.
