Sargent 8204 LSJ Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

Specifying commercial door hardware begins with coordinating function, trim code, and escutcheon style as a unified assembly — and the Sargent 8204 LSJ is built for exactly that discipline. Part of the Sargent 8200 Series, this mortise lockset combines the 8204 Storeroom or Closet function (ANSI F07) with the LSJ trim: an LS Security Escutcheon paired with a J lever. Outside entry is by key only; the inside lever always retracts the latchbolt freely for unobstructed egress. There is no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no occupancy indicator — the 8204 is a single-cylinder storeroom function, nothing more and nothing less. For architects and facility managers building a hardware schedule around a consistent escutcheon profile, the LSJ trim delivers a purposeful, specification-grade solution certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational and Security Grade 1.

8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07 Single-Cylinder Control

The 8204 defines a straightforward access hierarchy: a keyed cylinder controls outside entry while the inside trim provides free, unimpeded egress at all times. The outside trim remains locked continuously — no push-button, no thumbturn, no manual hold-open. This makes the 8204 the correct function specification wherever keyed-only outside control and reliable free egress are both required.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: A key in the outside cylinder retracts the latchbolt; the outside trim is locked at all times and cannot be turned without the key. The 8204 has no deadbolt and no thumbturn — the single-cylinder storeroom function provides keyed outside control with no additional locking hardware.
  • Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside trim always retracts the latchbolt, unconditionally, making egress immediate and requiring no key or tool from inside. This is the defining characteristic of the storeroom/closet function and the primary reason it is specified for supply rooms, storage areas, and similar controlled-access spaces.
  • Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: A stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch supplements the primary latchbolt. Because the auxiliary deadlatch is non-handed, it performs its anti-latch function regardless of how the lock body is oriented — supporting the field-reversible lock body without requiring a separate handed component.
  • Anti-Friction Latchbolt and Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt features a 3/4" (19mm) throw and anti-friction design, reducing door-closing resistance and smoothing cycle-after-cycle operation. The lockbody is a Multi-Function 8200/7800 body — Sargent's multi-functional platform that embodies nine functions in a single lockbody — keeping the installed base consistent across a hardware schedule even as function requirements vary by opening.

LS Security Escutcheon with J Lever — Trim Assembly Details

The LSJ trim pairs the LS Security Escutcheon — a security escutcheon that covers the lock area — with the J lever for a combination suited to institutional and commercial hardware schedules that call for both a defined escutcheon profile and secure lever grip. The trim is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations, ensuring proper alignment as the catalog specifies.

The catalog states the security benefit directly: Cylinder is protected by the Escutcheon, and (4) Spanner security screws are exposed on inside trim standard. That pairing is the reason to specify LS — the cylinder sits behind the escutcheon plate rather than standing proud of a rose, and the fasteners left exposed on the inside take a spanner bit rather than a common driver.

  • LS Security Escutcheon: The LS is a security escutcheon that covers the lock area of the door face. It is specified as security escutcheon trim on the 8200 Series and is the escutcheon component of this LSJ assembly.
  • J Lever and 30-Degree Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to retract the latchbolt — a notably short arc that reduces hand and wrist effort during high-traffic use. Lever springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim, which simplifies trim installation and protects the spring mechanism from wear introduced at the escutcheon level.
  • Through-Bolted Trim Interchange: Trim, knobs, and levers are through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations to ensure proper alignment, per catalog specification. This supports hardware schedule consistency when a project specifies both rose-mount and escutcheon-mount trims across different openings on the same keying system.
  • ADA Lever and Finish Selection: The J lever complies with the American Disability Act; consult local authorities to confirm applicability to your jurisdiction and occupancy. The LSJ trim is available in six architectural finishes: 626 Satin Chrome (US26D), 630 Satin Stainless (US32D), 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal (US10BE), 605 Polished Brass (US3), 612 Satin Bronze (US10), and 625 Polished Chrome (US26).

Function (Sargent Catalog)

  • Key outside retracts latchbolt
  • Trim outside locked at all times
  • Trim inside always retracts latchbolt
  • Auxiliary deadlatch
  • A Multi-Function 8200/7800 Lockbody

Key Product Features

  • 16 Million Cycle Verified Durability: The Sargent 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — exceeding the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 cycle requirement by 16 times (Verification ID: V584148). This is the standard against which the lockbody's long-term performance is independently confirmed.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc-dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — not sintered iron — combined with heavy-duty wrought steel hubs and a high-carbon steel spring cartridge for superior strength and cycle life.
  • UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listed, Positive Pressure Rated: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser class doors; meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test of Door Assemblies. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm the listing on the installed product.
  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: Certified to and exceeds the highest ANSI/BHMA commercial mortise lock grade with standard trims. Note: LFIC and SFIC cylinders do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements per the catalog — this listing offers conventional cylinders only, which preserve the full Grade 1 security rating.
  • Cylinder and Keyway Options — Conventional Cylinders Only: This listing is offered with LC (Less Cylinder) or LA Keyway conventional cylinder options. The cylinder is brass, size #41 (1-1/8") standard. Neither LFIC (large-format interchangeable core) nor SFIC (small-format interchangeable core) is available on this trim — the factory excludes interchangeable core options for this configuration. Specifiers standardising on an IC platform should note this constraint before ordering.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: The 8200 lockbody carries a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of the lockbody). The lock body is field reversible — re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — reducing installation time and simplifying inventory management on multi-opening projects.
